Hi all,

Im currently in the process of building a 3d / gaming rig for around £1300 and need some help with ram - cpu and cooler. Ill list some basic specs then my concerns underneath xD.

Specs -

CPU - I7 8700K

Motherboard - Asus maximus x hero (with wifi) or code upon release

GPU - GTX 1070ti

RAM - 2x4gb ddr4 2666mhz dominator platinum (act cheaper than lpx vengance)

Cooler - Be quite dark rock pro 3 (Not sure about this)

My first concern is about the ram clearance. With dominator platinum being such tall ram would the dark rock pro 3 fit? Would i be able to move one fan up without it looking Super out of place.

If the cooler fits will it be sufficient to cool a 8700k?

As i will be buying 2x4gb of dominator platinum would i be able to add another 2 sticks of the same model if i buy it later down the line? If so would i need to go into the bios or will it work automatically?

If the cooling is not sufficent and/or the ram is to high can somebody give me a cooler that has great cooling and within a black/white/silver build? (would like to keep the dominator platinum)

Thanks for the help and sorry for the very in-detailed post however i am in quite the rush xD.

The first time you mention the ram you say you are going to buy 4x2Gb the second time you say that you are going to buy 2x4Gb if you are going with 2x4Gb it will be easy to upgrade, but if you buy 4x2Gb all the ram slots are already full and you will need new ram.

Ok thanks for the help.

just out of interest would you happen to know about ram clearance. Im well aware that dominator platinum is to tall for the cooler however would i be able to raise the fan without it looking out of place and/or affecting cooling performance.

If i did buy 1 set of 2x4gb dominator platinum, could i add another 2x4gb set of the same speed and model without performance being affected, and would i have to go into bios.

Sorry if i seem as if i have no experience with computers, but im in an extreme rush so i cant go into much detail :)

Do you have to get the dominator platinum if you won't see the RAM under the cooler anyway?

Im going to be using an 8700k in my build paired with a asus maximus x hero (wifi) or the code upon release.

i plan to use dominator platinum 2x4gb then buy another 2x4gb sometime after the build (Dominator Platinum Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz C15 Memory Kit (CMD8GX4M2A2666C15)

My original cooler was going to be the dark rock pro 3 however the height of the ram is to tall for it, if possible could you recommend me a air cooler that can go with a white silver and black theme and cool a overclocked 8700k keeping it at a good temp.

I would rather not use aios or custom water cooling due to previous experiences

Thanks for the help!.

There's the Phanteks PH-TC14PE which can come in different colors such as black or white.

You can raise the front fan if you do not have enough RAM clearance, though it will also result in making the cooler itself taller. Alternatively, you can even remove the front fan, but this may reduce cooling performance a bit.

I would get a NH-D15s and then get the Chromax fan to go with it. It can handle the wattage and will clear your RAM. I know Linus has preached the gospel of Noctua for years. After I finally tried one, I won't buy anything else. They really are that good.

Can they keep a 8700k cool, i would like to keep it at 65 under load, with the max being 75 (only 75 on spikes) I know thisis a push for air cooling but i lost my own system to a aio.

Why are you aiming for such low temps? You're fine up to 80-90c at load.

Do you think the dark rock 3 can keep the 8700k cool at 65 under load with 75 when it spikes?

It depends what you're using to test for loads and spikes. When the cooler is properly mounted, you shouldn't encounter spikes beyond normal load temps.

Where are you shopping/located? Budget? What case are you using?

Unless you delid literally nothing will keep the 8700k at an average of 65 degrees under prime 95 small fft load. Literally nothing. I doubt even full custom water cooling loops at stock settings will do that. My 8700 non k runs at 80 degrees with an NH D15 under small FFT load. I doubt you'll get 15 degrees better than that.
