Are you going for 60fps or trying to push higher frames on a high refresh rate monitor (60+)

CHIP COMPARISON:

R5 1600 runs cooler.

i5 8400 will generally push more fps (though if you're limited by your GPU, then this really isn't a big problem).

R5 1600 and whatever board you pair it with will be supported longer (AM4 support planned through 2019. Intel likely will cut support by end of 2nd quarter 2018).

R5 1600 has more threads overall which can help in multitasking (reduce overall slowdown).

i5 8400 has higher IPC which will help in many games, though its lower thread count may inhibit streaming capabilities (as noted above).

In short, if you're gaming, the i5 8400 will pull ahead, especially in when using a high refresh panel (where you can experience above 60fps). However, the extra threads can benefit different work loads, especially streaming. The R5 1600 will not perform AS well (though its certainly a great chip) in games, though will generally make up for it in streaming and rendering.

Just remember that 4.0ghz on an Intel chip and 4.0ghz on an AMD chip are NOT the same.

Budget/Country and what is your monitor set up?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?
