The connectors are keyed that way  (with mix of rounded and square holes) so that you won't accidentally plug pci-e 8 pin connectors in the cpu power connector. The pci-e power cables have the polarity reversed so plugging them in the cpu header would be bad.

The "round" pins can go into square holes in the headers. You just can't plug square pins into rounded holes in connectors on motherboard.

The two cpu power connectors are these :

So normally you can split the 8pin connector from the power supply and only one half of the connector can be inserted in the 4pin connector on the motherboard.

The way the connector is shaped on your power supply allows for either of the two 4pin parts to be plugged in that small 4 pin connector (if your motherboard had one).

So you have the part with  square, round, round, square that fits perfectly into that cpu 4 pin header, but you also have the part with four round pins which will also fit into the cpu 4 pin connector.

If the 8 pin connector can't be split in two, then it's extra useful because it allows to plug the 8pin connector onto the motheboard with either the left or right part of the connector hanging outside the header (depending on how much space there is around the header)
