EVGA GTX 970 4GB vs XFX RX 580 8GB

DefinitelyTech

I just found a local offer for a 580 for $200 barely used. This seems like such a good deal, and I am debating about using the card to upgrade my own system. While I still plan to game at 1080 72Hz, The temperatures on my 970 are higher than I would like, and it gets quite loud.

I realize its only a 15% increase give or take but will this cooler provide better temps, and/or is the $200 deal too good to pass up. (Even though it's MSRP) I could easily just flip this card for profit when it comes down to it.

It's actually a significant upgrade, I recently upgraded my dad's MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G 100ME Edition to a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 8GB and it's quite a bit faster (he's gaming at 1440p though so the difference is bigger than at 1080p)

Though try to make sure this GPU wasn't used for mining.

Fixed it ;)

It's 4GB :) The last 512MB part of the memory is just a lot slower. It's normally usable and available though so technically it's 4GB.

Awesome, that will open the door to future 1440p gaming, but do you have any thoughts on cooling? Does the 580 stay cooler?

It's a tough one, while technically faster, is it fast enough to warrant the spend.
I suppose you could flip the 970 and recoup at least half of that?

From my experience, 970s are still going for 150-175 USD shipped on r/hardwareswap

It depends on the cooling solution. The Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ is one of the best 580s so the cooler is great, but if you bought some low-end Gigabyte model then I'd expect it to run loud & hot. What particular XFX model you have in mind?

From experience - XFX should be good but I'd make sure by checking out some reviews of that particular variant of the card :)

Yes I know, but nobody wants slow memory, so it's 3.5gb :P
