CPU Bottleneck; best upgrade recommendations

Good day,

 

So, when I first built my PC, I didn't consider overclocking, and it was dumb. Because now, my CPU is my main bottleneck in any demanding game (Xcom2, Mass Effect Andromeda, and heavily modded Skyrim being the biggest culprits). 

 

I currently have an Intel i5-6500 Skylake chip, and am considering buying a new processor and then selling my old processor.  Research indicates I could get at least a decent deal for it.

 

Now, for upgrade options. I'm not quite ready to buy a new motherboard yet (currently running a Gigabyte GA-Z170XP LGA 1151), so I want to know what you all would recommend for the best upgrade option for a chip that would be compatible with my current board. Most of what I do with this PC produces a single-threaded workload, so I would want to focus on that, along with future overclocking. I did pick up a CM Hyper 212 over Black Friday, so I should have better thermals than the stock heatsink.

 

I was thinking of the i7-7700k, but wanted to get the thoughts of this group first.  Thanks!

Yes i think the best upgrade would be the 7700k.

yeah  the i7 7700k makes better sense, it is a great processor and you'll save a lot of money ince its price is getting a bit down while retaining all the rest you already have... no need to go Coffee Lake, the 7700 might not be as exciting as the 8700 but it still is a beast on his own right.

Agree with others on 7700k. Make sure to check bios version supports it before you swap. Update bios if necessary.
