Looking for a deal on a video card that's at least 4 GB

JR Tyner

Does anyone know of a good Black Friday / Cyber Monday deal on a video card that's has at least a 4 GB GPU for my Dell OptiPlex 790 Mini-Tower?

Newegg is having RX 580's for 199.99

May have an issue if the BIOS never got updated to support RX cards. But ya you won't find anything better at $199

I had a problem a long time ago from not keeping my BIOS up to date, now I check it once a month along with other updates.

This one is a better deal without the rebate card. still with 8GBs of VRAM, but I am not sure what else is different? I'm still a novice at upgrading PCs.

Likely fine, the XFX unit is probably a bit nicer overall, their GTR RX 480 was one of the best, not sure how the 580 units compare.

I have never actually gotten anything back from one despite following the instructions perfectly.

I agree with getting the 580, and I'm thinking about picking one up for myself.

@Streetguru I've done 2 rebates so far. One was from EVGA and I got the money just fine, but one was from Asrock, and they "haven't received" it. I'm sure I did everything correctly because I triple checked the forms and sent them to Asrock America. So... Rip my 20 dollars.

Before I ordered it, I got out a ruler, it's .05" too long. So back to the drawing board.

It looks like I will be limited to a 6GB card due to physical size between the case and power supply, but will 6GB be enough for any non-VR game on Steam?

The two I see on sale that will fit in my case:

ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 Mini, ZT-P10600A-10L, 6GB GDDR5 Super Compact :

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500402&ignorebbr=1

MSI GeForce GTX 1060 DirectX 12 GTX 1060 6G OCV1 6GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready ATX Video Card:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137095&ignorebbr=1

Also it looks like no matter where I put it I am going to lose 2 PCIE slots due to the double height of video cards? Correct me if I am wrong, but I can only put one of these cards in the blue colored slot and it will block the short black one? So I guess this means I'll only be able to install this and a sound card? I'll just have to settle for running my games off an external drive through USB 2.0, I don't see where I could fit a USB 3.0 card?

Wait why do you need like a USB card, and a sound card?

Also a single fan 1060 is going to run either hot or loud. They do make single slot 1030s, not sure why 4gbs of VRAM is a requirement.

Given the age of your system and how limiting that case is...might even be worth saving that cash for Raven Ridge APUs...What's your current GPU? Is this your only PC or is it a spare?

why do you need a USB card: My system doesn't have a USB 3.0, but my Steam library is on an External Drive, so 3.0 would we faster.

and a sound card? The sound card on my Mother Board is notoriously bad.

4gbs of VRAM isn't a requirement I guess, but a goal. I have Humble Bundle Monthly, where I donate to a different charity every month and I get free Steam codes. I now have over 300 different Steam games, so I just want to make sure they all run well.

I do not have a current GPU. This is my only PC. I am saving up to build a VR system, but that's a year away, and then this will be my spare.

I just want to be able to enjoy my games on Steam. Currently, they take a while to load from my External Drive over USD 2.0, the video is not smooth, and the sound is not good.

Ya...I'd probably just replace it if it has all those limitations and issues. Get on AM4 most likely so you can upgrade to a Ryzen 5 2600 or whatever is out next year and a $200-300 GPU next year as well. Looks like your PSU is a standard ATX one.

The A8 will do alright running more modern games at like 720p, the iGPU is going to be better than intel's in any event. I ran on APUs for a while, they really weren't that bad.
