Why are there plenty of RAM out of stock?

So on the 2nd Nov i bought Trident Z RGB and it still is out of stock for nearly 3 weeks on Amazon. I decided to look for other RAM sticks which looked good too, but it seems alot of the DDR4 16GB are out of stock.

Any Ideas why?

There is currently a worldwide NAND flash shortage which is the critical component in memory. Because of that RAM and other forms of memory can't be manufactured and therefore can't be offered to consumers. The lower supply also explains why the price on RAM and SSDs is so high right now.

Oh shoot. When aproxxomately do you think this shortage end by because i want to finish a build before christmas

Oh well let me just get on the phone with my Chinese suppliers :D. In all reality though, I have no clue, and I don't know hardly enough to make predictions. I have read articles that say it is expected to continue well into 2018. I believe the shortage originated in 2016? maybe earlier in 2014? when there was a massive fire that destroyed the largest NAND flash fabrication facility in China, which because it has to be dust free environment meant they couldn't salvage what was left of the facility.

On top of that 3D NAND (unrelated to ram) is expensive and more complex to make and is putting pressure on the market as well as the ever growing new phone every year mobile market that sucks up incredibly large amounts of supply.

If you want a computer by Christmas prepare your wallet because you are going to have to pay a premium to get the parts that already have inflated prices.

Just curious do you know any other causes? I've read Apple is contributing 18% of the shortage

Well I am sure there are many many causes, it is a global market after all. If Apple wants to purchase 18% of the NAND flash then they can do that. The big issue is that supply has dropped dramatically but demand has not lowered to compensate, and it isn't reasonable to expect demand to drop anyway.

It is basically all these manufacturers (like Apple) who saw an opportunity to buy TONS of RAM for relatively cheap a few years ago, so now that production is restrained and demand for RAM is at an all time high and manufacturers have tons of it stored to put in their crappy smartphones, gaming consoles and laptops. Basically, the ones that are suffering the worst are those who couldn’t buy all the silicon back then.  basically smallercompanies (as in not Apple Lenovo etc.) and the general public. 

This won’t stop until manufacturing is ramped up which will take time. Some analysts expect the shortage to start to dissipate by the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019.

I'm not necessarily sure this is true. I don't think it would make much sense for Apple to hoard tons of flash because it becomes outdated so quickly. If they purchased large amounts before production took a hit then they would have stock piles of DDR3 which is not being used in modern smartphones and computers. DDR4 is the standard now and DDR4 prices are also inflated and that is being made brand new now and couldn't have been hoarded. The idea of artificial scarcity being created by companies buying far more than they need does not really make all that much sense. And even if that was the case this would be a huge business opportunity for companies with these stockpiles. If they had them they could sell all the NAND flash they aren't using to companies that want it and make a quick buck but evidently they aren't doing that.

The majority of the problem is a shard decrease in supply due to the fire that took place a while ago, and demand continuing to grow.
