So we need a new router at home since we moved our router/modem combo into the fuse box room (to cut down the 20M 0.25mm cable) which was a horrible bottleneck.

But now I wired a LAN cable below the floor to the living room and we need a WIFI and LAN access point there.

We have a 45mb down and 10mb up connection to our home, and we want to be able to use the full potential of that all the time.

We also regularly use a steam link to stream games through a LAN line and thus need at least 3 LAN jacks on the device with good enough speed.

We have a budget of around €100,- and we live in The Netherlands.

Also, we do have devices capable of 5Ghz, but most of them are on 2.4Ghz

So I was looking for some good routers but I can't seem to find the difference between €70 and €130 like the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 and the TP-Link Archer D7.

Are there some hidden features/specs I'm missing? and which one would you suggest, and what are your experiences?

Here is a list of what I was looking at:

Netgear Nighthawk R7000

TP-Link Archer D7

TP-Link Archer C8

D-Link WiFiDIR-859

D-Link DIR-868L

TP-Link Archer C7

DIR-869 EXO AC1750

Netgear R6400

Sitecom WLR-8200 X8

Since you've already got a modem-router in place you've got to make sure that you configure your new router to act as a wireless access point.

If you use it the way it comes configured out of the box you're going to run into problems with double NAT.

With that aside: the Netgear R7000 is a fine choice. Personally I would stay away from the selected D-Link units as they don't have support for DFS.

DFS allows you to use a certain set of reserved frequencies in the 5 GHz band, this could make a difference if you live in an area with lots of 5 GHz networks (like an apartment building).

Yeah that's DSL.

Not that is matters though, as you've already got a modem-router in place.

What? Why? Phone line boosters don't work for VDSL, putting one in will completely mess up the signal.

How is this random snippet of information going to help OP, or anyone else for that matter?

Better off with a switch and an access point or 2 for the config you're suggesting OP. Switch for around 20 euros for 8 port, and an access point from about 25 euros or so for a cheap-ish one, or around 50-80 for a ubiquiti.

I setup an Archer C7 once upon a time. My sister at the time lived in maybe a 1500 sq foot house. It covered the entire house pretty well. Even though the router was in the one corner. The firmware was lacking when it came to features and you can tell it was designed by someone that English was not their first language. But, it had good range and speeds for a decent price.

I have a DLink router currently. Its running DDWRT. But from what I remember, the stock firmware was kinda shit. The interface was confusing and it required to be rebooted after any setting was changed. The only thing I can say about Netgear is they had the major security problem a while back with their firmware. Personally if it were me, Id choose based on if the router supported third party firmware like DDWRT. As DDWRT seems to be very solid.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
