What items uses M4x12 screws?

79wjd

I accidentally threw out the screws to attach my monitor's stand (standard VESA mount), so I believe m4x12 screws should work, but I don't really feel like waiting for some m4x12 screws to ship.....so is there any computer component or something frequently around that uses m4x12 screws (or something similar)?

The only suggestion I can make is, the screws that hold the PSU in place?

PSUs usually use #6-32 screws.

Certainly not in the PC. Those use #6 32 UNC and M3 screws.

Any suggestions of what might have compatible screws?

Nope, pretty much nothing.

Computers use a mix of imperial (UTS 6-32) for psu, motherboard and hdd and extension cards (pci-e , pci) locking, and M3 for optical drives and M2 for M.2 connectors (most of the time)

Even the hex screws on DVI and VGA are some imperial thing like 6-40 or something to that effect.

Well I guess I'll have to buy some then :/

@seon123 @mariushm Do you know what the imperial equivalent to M4x12s are? Would it be half inch 8/36?

You can't really shove imperial screws into metric holes and the other way around , the threads are different (different number of threads per inch) and the pitch is also different

M4 is 4 mm (0.15748 inch ) in diameter  and has a P  (pitch) of 0.7 for the "course" version or 0.5 for the "fine" version

Closest to it would be UNF #8 (fine) , which is 0.164"  (4.1656 mm) in diameter  and has a pitch of 0.7056 mm  - obviously close but no cigar, can't replace m4 with imperial.

Well, I was hoping to get some screw at the locksmith across the street (who may or may not even sell screws) and if he doesn't have screws, then I have to try the supermarket/pharmacy, and if neither of them has any screws then I have to pay $6 shipping for $1 worth of screws. So I'm willing to try imperial if that's my only local option since it's probably close enough.

The Home Depot ones should be fine.

Check out some car parts shops close to you as well. Some imports or even some US cars may have metric standard screws in them.

These look good? https://www.amazon.com/Two-Packs-M4x12mm-Monitors-Stainless/dp/B01CTLQQJ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511729394&sr=8-1&keywords=m4x12

They're a bit cheaper with free shipping.

There's not much within walking distance of where I am, which is why I was considering imperial.

Are you to lazy to pick up the phone and call some auto shops around your place and ask if they have those?

You don't need to go in person, just call.

Like I said, metric screws are used in lots of things these days, not just computers.

And why wait until Friday.. order from here (pick the material and length), you'll probably get them by Tuesday  : https://www.digikey.com/short/q3rw9t

Even if I call around I have no way of getting to any of them.

And the minimum order is 100 screws; I need 4.

I know this is an old post..

but... why did no one suggest taping the holes?

or get new threaded inserts?

and believe me, you most certainly can use screws that aren't quite the right size.

I've done it on... um... large international contracts with a company responsible for high speed mass transit. if it works enough for that, your monitor will be fine. one screw is more than enough to support the weight. use loctite if itll help you sleep.

And why did you have to wait? Too good to prop the monitor up for a few days?

No one in FIVE YEARS thought of any of this?!

lol..
