New Build or Upgrade?

Hey y'all I need some help deciding on what to do with my PC.

Currently have a 4790k, gtx 960 (yea weird combo I know), 8gb of ram, and a 1 terabyte hard drive.

My plan is to get a 1440p monitor but I need a new GPU for sure to run games at that res. I also want to get an SSD, and 16 GB of RAM. My plan is to get a Dell S2716DG and a 1070ti or 1080. Im not sure whether to get a 250 or 500 GB SSD.

I don't really need more than 4 cores but the hyper threading is something I don't want to lose.

Should I upgrade? Or build a new system and sell my old one? Any other tips would be helpful too.

Upgrade. Get a 1070 (ti if you have the money), the 1440p monitor and a 250 gb ssd if youre just storing the OS and 2-4 games, but get 500gb+ if you have more games.

The i7-4790K is still plenty powerful.

My brother is in a similar boat as you right now (i5-4690K, Vapor-X Radoen HD 7950)...and he's just planning to just upgrade his GPU.

 

Choose the upgrade path:

  • SSD, 500GB for sure
  • If the GTX 1070 Ti prices are good, get that, otherwise, GTX 1080
  • 8GB is not mandatory, but if you can get a 16GB kit for cheap, or can just add another 8GB, then go for it
