You can skip the next few paragraphs, they're just there to explain and help you understand my situation :)

So after reading numerous nightmare-fueling reviews about Xotic PC (and add the fact that I might need international shipping). My dreams of getting a Sager laptop is now buried 6 feet deep under the ground. So now, I've taken the advice of different people from this forum and decided to go the more local route and the only great choices are from MSI, Alienware and possibly Asus.

Context: I'm about to go to college, so I'd prefer the lighter option among my choices. But as long as it doesn't weigh more than 7 pounds - I'm good. I will also be using this for video editing, programming and coding (I am aware that this does not necessarily mean that I need very high-end laptops), and gaming (although I'm not aiming to play at max settings).

Which is why I prefer that it would be future-proof, which means I might want either of these qualities:

1. has a 7th Gen i7

2. has a SSD (that's upgradeable in case it's not that big)

3. IPS screen or something just as good(I'm not too familiar with this one).

4. I prefer the GTX 1070, but if it gets too expensive then maybe I'll settle for a GTX 1060.

---

So far I've boiled them down to these ones:

1. MSI GT62VR DOMINATOR PRO-239

2. MSI GT62VR Dominator Pro-238

3. MSI GS43VR Phantom Pro-069 14 Inch GTX 1060

4. MSI GT62VR Dominator-240

5. Alienware 15 R3 i7-7700HQ G-Sync GTX 1060 256GB SSD 16GB Gaming Laptop

Recommendations and other suggestions are welcomed - I AM getting old so maybe I might stick to console (Switch) gaming in the near future. And if you're wondering I'm from the Philippines - so my choices might be limited. Thanks a bunch! :)

There's already 8th gen, and next year there will be 9th gen so there goes your "future proofing" :)

@WereCat Yeah well it's unavoidable anyway. I just want something that could last me for almost 5 years, just enough to save up for a new one.

@Giulio Cellocco thanks. I'll look into its reviews. Does it have any drawbacks?

Maybe the keyboard being ugly-ish. Everything else seems amazing for the price: 120hz 1080p with g.sync for 1670 usd is nothing short of miracoulus.

It does seem too good to be true, I'm just a little bit worried of its screen. Plus for its price it doesn't look too premium. I'll take note if though and last I checked, its available in my country.

Haven't seen this cute sets from MSI :o

If you will look at comparison https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/msi-gt62vr-6re Alienware R3 is a bit better than MSI GT62 Dominator Pro. Looks like they are recommending Digital Storm Equinox if you want to save some $ but don't know about it.

@johnjohns111 and if I'm not mistaken they're comparing that to the older Alienware 15 R3 (it still has the i5), does this mean that the Alienware 15 R3 with i7 is better? Or am I interpreting this all wrong?

NEVER buy a laptop by brand, every brand has good and bad products

Avoid Asus ROG series, most of them have issues and not great for money, MSI GT and Alienware 15 are good, however IMO the GT has better cooling which is important for a hot card like GTX 1070

Consider Clevo laptops as well

@ZM Fong I guess my post came out wrong but I'm not picking by brand at all, it's just that these are the brands that are available in my country that are actually decent.

I did consider Sager, but I'm a bit skeptical on ordering from Xotic PC with all the international fees and all, plus our local online reseller charges $250 more, which is absurd.

If ever the Alienware 15 R3 is not available, which among the MSI GT series is ideal? I'm leaning towards the Dominator-240 as it fits my budget.

There are no such thing like 'decent' brand

Generally, any GT series laptop is good. Make sure you check reviews from notebookcheck

Well coming from a country filled with cheap knock-offs, subjective as 'decent' may sound, it is. Anyway, thanks a bunch! I'll be sure to check more reviews before I take the jump. :)

Thanks for letting me know, but my case might be different. You're in the US so the cost might not be as big. Thanks for sharing though.

The GT62VR 239 looks like a great option.

Very good cooling, with top notch performance. Do uninstall the bloat though.

I'm somewhat skeptical on recommending MSI due to their quality control scares over the past few months but if it does have a worldwide warranty, you're safe.

I still recommend Clevo bases for gaming laptops with a GTX 1070 as some laptops (namely the RoG GL502/702VS and the GE73VR) struggles to keep the 1070 under control mainly due to their svelte profile (and in the case of the ASUS, inadequate cooling for that sort of GPU). Clevo bases aren't the best when it comes to build quality but many of them pack a huge punch.

The Workhorse (AMD-powered custom desktop)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | GPU: MSI X Trio GeForce RTX 2070S | RAM: XPG Spectrix D60G 32GB DDR4-3200 | Storage: 512GB XPG SX8200P + 2TB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda Compute | OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

The Portable Workstation (Apple MacBook Pro 16" 2021)

SoC: Apple M1 Max (8+2 core CPU w/ 32-core GPU) | RAM: 32GB unified LPDDR5 | Storage: 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD | OS: macOS Monterey

The Communicator (Apple iPhone 13 Pro)

SoC: Apple A15 Bionic | RAM: 6GB LPDDR4X | Storage: 128GB internal w/ NVMe controller | Display: 6.1" 2532x1170 "Super Retina XDR" OLED with VRR at up to 120Hz | OS: iOS 15.1

Trust me, I'd love a Clevo laptop but my options are quite limited right now. I'll find a way soon enough though. Thanks a bunch for the help and for clearing that up!

@D13H4RD2L1V3Sorry for sort of necro-ing this a bit. But I wanted to clarify something.

Since I'd have to take into account the international shipping fee, I might have to settle for the NP8156 or MSI GT62VR Dom-240 which only has the GTX 1060.

Are those still solid options?

P.S. I was actually considering the Alienware but the number of complaints about it online is freaking me out. Looks solid though.
