AMD is making money again!

Source 1: posted by DocSwag https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/850792-amd-releases-q3-earnings-results-significantly-higher-net-income-than-previous-quarters/

Source 2: http://ir.amd.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=74093&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=2310889

  • AMD third quarter earnings beat expectations and put the company’s ledgers back in the black in their GAAP earnings.

  • For the quarter, AMD:

    • had revenues of $1.64 billion, compared to $1.31 billion a year ago, which is a gain of just over 25%.

    • Operating income was $126 million, compared to a $293 million loss a year ago,

    • and net income was $71 million, compared to a net loss of $406 million a year ago.

    • This resulted in earnings per share of $0.07, compared to a loss per share of $0.50 in Q3 2016.

  • Average Sale Price of GPUs was up significantly, thanks in large part to the proliferation of cryptocurrency

  • This quarter was especially strong in the Enterprise, Embedded, and Semi-Custom segment console makers preparing for the holiday sales and the lead-up to the Xbox One X

  • AMD's earnings results were beyond expectation and yet the stock price declined severely

UK Govt. Responds To Loot Box Petition

Source 1: posted by Master Disaster https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/851336-uk-govt-responds-to-loot-box-petition-loot-boxes-are-not-gamblng-as-there-is-no-way-to-convert-the-prize-into-real-money/

Source 2: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/201300

  • Citizens in the UK have become increasingly wary of Loot Boxes in games, and 15,000 of them have signed a petition for the government to assess whether Loot Boxes should be subject to standard gambling laws.

  • Where the facility exists for players of video games to purchase a key to unlock a bundle containing an unknown quantity and value of in-game items as a prize, and where there are readily accessible opportunities to cash in or exchange those awarded in-game items for money or money’s worth, then these elements of the game are likely to be considered licensable gambling activities.

  • In contrast, where prizes are restricted for use solely within the game, such in-game features would not be licensable gambling.

  • Still, the government will enforce advertising laws:

    • businesses [may] not subject anyone to misleading or aggressive marketing practices, or, for example, direct exhortation to buy products, such as games content, including in-game purchases such as loot boxes.

    • The government is committed to ensuring that consumers are properly protected and that children’s vulnerability and inexperience is not exploited by aggressive commercial practices.

  • They may also adjust the Rating that they apply to games with Loot Boxes and similar quasi-gambling mechanics:

    • The PEGI video game ratings criteria currently make provision for games depicting simulations of traditional gambling, and such games would generally attract a minimum PEGI rating of 12.

    • The VSC Rating Board is discussing these issues with the PEGI Council and its Experts Group to determine whether any changes to the PEGI criteria need to be made.

  • At 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament

Intel Launches its Next-Gen Intel Optane 900p SSD

Source 1: posted by Hawx https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/851739-intel-launches-its-next-gen-intel-optane-900p-ssd/

Source 2: https://www.tweaktown.com/news/59654/intel-launches-next-gen-optane-ssd-900p/index.html

  • Intel has launched their first retail 3D XPoint based SSD - the Intel Optane SSD 900P Series.

  • Unlike Optane Memory, which is a cache SSD, the Intel Optane 900P Series are full blown SSDs

  • The 900P series will be offered in two capacities and two form factors:

  • U.2 - 280GB

  • Add-In-Card at both 280GB and 480GB

  • Unlike flash based SSDs, Optane SSDs don't rely on capacity for higher performance:

    • The 280GB 900P is just as fast as the 480GB one.

  • In a workstation environment, Optane SSDs deliver up to 4X the performance of the fastest flash-based NVMe SSDs.

  • Another huge advantage Optane 900P SSDs have over their flash-based consumer counterparts is endurance.

    • Consumer flash-based SSDs get about one drive-write per day of endurance.

    • The 900P Series is rated for 10 drive-writes per day of endurance.

  • You will pay roughly 4X more per gigabyte of storage for Optane, but you will get up to 4X the performance and 10X the endurance available from consumer flash-based SSDs

  • Amazon.com Inc. is going to start delivering packages not just to doorsteps, but inside homes as well.

  • The new service, called Amazon Key, incorporates a smart lock fitted to a customer’s door, as well as a new Amazon security camera to record the movements of the delivery person.

    • Only Amazon drivers can do this- not FEDEX or DHL

  • The driver will unlock the door, place the package inside, close the door, and lock it.- all  on camera

  • The service is available exclusively to Amazon Prime members, and starts at US$250.

    • The In-Home Kit includes an Amazon Cloud Cam and one of several smart locks made by Yale and Kwikset.

  • Amazon Key will be available in 37 U.S. cities from Nov. 8.

  • Amazon will also offer free installation of the kits.

  • The Cloud Cam, will additionally be sold as a standalone device for US$120

  • Amazon Key also opens the door to future integration with in-home service providers, such as cleaners and pet sitters, in the coming months.

    • Brands already signed on to enter dwellings via Amazon Key include

      • Merry Maids

      • animal caregiver Rover.com.

  • The company intends to give homeowners the ability to let third parties enter, conduct their business, and depart with the house fastened up securely. While the work is taking place, the customer can track and talk to the hired hands using Amazon’s Cloud Cam.

  • Friends and family will also be permitted into people’s homes.

    • Using Amazon’s Key app, a pre-authorized person can be allowed in while the owner retains control over the frequency of entrances and the lengths of their stay.

PS Jeff Bezos became the richest man in the world today as amazon’s stock price surged 13% to a record high of over $1,100. Bezos owns ~81 million shares and is now worth ~90B

The naming scheme of the new processors is interesting. I think that certain people may look at the intel mobile series and think that they are faster, as a higher number is clearly better. AMD has done this before and Idk why they didn’t do it again

Darn, I was really hoping that you'd cover Microsoft lying about Win10 telemetry being anonymous.  It's always fun to see @Slick's Win10 rants.

Is it just me or are there less topics which are covered more in depth? Usually a lot more make it in.

@LinusTech Have you guys considered getting dedicated hardware to do the WAN show, like a Tricaster? It seems like having stuff run through software like Xsplit is inherently prone to bugs.

I kinda disagree with Linus on the being left behind part of amazon key, its something you'd refer to not being comfortable with things like android/apple pay, maybe vr ect.

I'm pretty sure 99% of people will realize this is stupid, no matter how old they are.

I think vega desktop is kinda disappointing, but its still gonna sell well due to mining and compute uses, but ryzen/vega mobile is very likely to be a gem

Netflix 4k was one of the ways Intel forced people to buy Kabylake, its one of the things that make me bias towards amd (and with the constant mobo changes ect)

It took me a while to learn that stock prices are not so much about the past or current performance, but more about the future. If you buy into a company, you are hoping it will grow and increase your value. The predicted decline in Q4 will contribute to that drop.

@danieltien Am in the broadcast industry, we used to use Tricasters, now we use vMix, which is Windows software, and vastly prefer it. The whole thing is built around off-loading the right tasks to the GPU, and it's incredible, I must say. True professional vision-mixing software.

Just to pick up on what Linus said regarding the amazon key part, he said that for a babysitter or gardener etc he (or Yvonne) would personally interview/confirm the person.

So basically that investigative stage is being passed to amazon's vetting process. And the end user just relies on amazon to ensure the trustworthiness of any delivery person.

No thanks, however the concept of turning an out building into a secure lockup for the sole us of me and amazon? yeah, I'm all for that

I see quite a few YouTube comments clamoring "Leave politics out of videos"

What am I missing? I didn't see much controversial / political stuff at all?

It is time to update the wan show.

1) use more cameras and put in a show director that can switch between 2-4 cameras and the computer screens.

2) move to desktops and have the keyboards and mouse on the desk with the monitors under the cameras or just forward out of view of the camera, so you can talk to your audience.

3) move the preview monitor from the side to just below the cameras.

4) have someone watch the stream and queue you with the comments instead of having to read them all the time.

Some of this could be automated however doing this could allow you St start producing the wan show more often and possibly get the show on local TV.

Edit: oh yeah 5) change the intro. It is out dated for a professional show.

@LinusTech you seem to misunderstand how forks work with cryptocurrency your money does not fork the blockchain does so both chains have whatever you had pre fork so using your example of 50$ you'd end up with 50 dollars and 50 dollhairs not 25 25.

On game studios orphaning multiplayer games...  If you release a popular game, and years later want to sell newer games that may or may not suck, especially to gamers that liked the first game, having a 3rd party provider of servers, prolonging the life span of a game that brings you little new income AND hurts your current games sales and reviews...  is a bad business model. If you have share holders who are more important to you than the gamers buying your product.  Just saying.
