Hi guys,

Wanted to know your opinions and the parts you would suggest for this project.

I have now 3 racked servers: 1 with Open Media Vault for NAS, 1 for a Remote desktop for my girlfriend and I and one that I'm trying to convert into a domain controller (have a hard time making it work but i'll see later)

Wanted to compact everything into a single server using ESXi.

Here are the parts that I have at home to build a server:

8x8Gb DDR3 ECC Registerd

2x16Gb + 8Gb DDR4 ECC

1 Xeon 2630v2

1 spare 4U chassis (Inter Tech 4129-n; https://www.inter-tech.de/en/products/ipc/server-cases/4u-4129-n)

1 dell perc h310

Enough 3Tb Ironwolf drives and SSD's

What would you do?

Going with used 2011-0 parts or go for the more recent 2011-3 socket?

Or even something different?

the xeon 2630v2 is not compatible with the chipsets for lga 2011v3. your gonna have to use lga 2011.

Sorry, I haven't been as explicit as I would have liked to.

If I go the used 2630v2 route, I would need to buy a new motherboard and 2nd 2630v2 on ebay. You can find some cheap e5's out there.

If I go the new 2011-3 route, I will have to see if I can find an e5 v3 on ebay or buy one new CPU and find a motherboard for it.

The 2630v2 route would cost me +- 340€ for an ASrock Rack EP2C602 and +-70€ for a second 2630v2.

Haven't really checked on prices for the 2011v3 hardware but I guess it will be higher.

A lot higher, better to stick with v1 and v2 for now.

Thanks for the advice:)

I've ordered a second e5-2630v2 and the ASRock EP2C602.

I'll post some pics when I get everything assembled.

Plus, on the 2011-0 route, you still have DDR3 support. With the current memory prices, ECC DDR4 is no exception, you're much better off now. 64GB is ample for a "home" environment. Heck, I run my VM's on a HP Microserver G8 right now with 16GB, hah.

As I already had DDR3 and 4, no problem with that, but I'd hate to have to buy some more at the moment.

I love Microservers by the way, great, space saving and reliable machines. I have one at work;)

I'm running way more on an Intel NUC (albeit an i7 model).

I assume that 2 E5-2630v2 and 64gb RAM is... a bit overkill. But I wanted to reuse some of the stuff I had lying on shelves.

What I planned to do is:

NAS VM with the PERC h310 card, 4 Ironwolf 3tb, 4 cores and 16gb of ram under freenas.

"Work" VM with 12 cores and 24gb of RAM as it's shared between my girlfriend and I and I do a lot of photo editing so more cores usualy help a bit.

Domain controller vm with 2 cores and 4gb RAM.

That leaves me with some resources left for some other vm funB|

And I think I'm also doing it for fun;)

It's a shame you weren't in the market for a 2620 v2 :P

Would have been a nice upgrade from the 1607v2 I have at work:P

But I won't be here anymore in the short term...

A domain controller will happily run on just 1 core ;) they barely do anything haha.

Hi guys,

I received the motherboard on saturday and started building the server.

Here is the first pic I took;)

20171029_200431.thumb.jpg.d46ec9c5b901cc5c235028cb3e973a5e.jpg

The inter tech 4129-n is massive next to all my other chassis. I bought it discounted several months ago but I kept it in my garage in case I needed a big chassis.

When in the box it just didn't feel so big.

Still waiting for my second e5 2630v2 to arrive today so I'll be able to make some progress this evening.

Here are the final specs of the build:

Chassis: Inter Tech 4129-N SSI-EEB

PSU: Seasonic SS-660XP 660W

Motherboard: ASRock Rack EP2C602

CPU's: 2x 2630V2 6 cores @2.6GHz

RAM: 8x8Gb DDR3 ECC RDIMM from Crucial

Coolers: 2xIntel BXTS13A

Storage: 2x Intel 530 SSD 240Gb, 4x 3Tb Seagate Ironwolf

Others: Intel AF-DA 10Gb NIC, Dell PERC H310 SATA/SAS adapter and an ICY BOX backplane

Looking snazzy! If only I wasn't so space constrained hah. Microserver it is, for now xD

Thanks:)

I hesitated to get a microserver before having the 19" rack but finally I chose the overkill:P

Recieved the second 2630v2 by the way, can't wait to place it on the boardB|

Hi guys,

The server is finally ready, here are the final pics of it;)

And one with the lights out

20171101_203027(1).thumb.jpg.37a01d609a40bd64a1dfe4310dc21ecb.jpg

Still have to replace the stock 120mm fans with some Arctic cooling PST-CO fans but the stock ones are not as noisy as I'd thought:)

And maybe do something a little better for cable management...

Note that Intel AF-DA 10Gb NICs tend to heat a lot so I did some ghetto fan mod to keep it cool:P
