Is PUBG's overwhelmingly disproportionate number of cheaters courtesy of sellable crates and cosmetics?

Cheaters will exist in any game. That much is an unmutable truth. I've been playing multiplayer games since the inception of broadband, and I must say, the number of cheaters in PUBG seems far more common than any other paid game I've played, coming close to rivaling even some F2P games. I've been trying to look at the reasoning behind this from an objective standpoint, and the only conclusion I can come up with is that the reason why there are so many cheaters is because they're farming BP for crates that they can then flip on the marketplace. I can't help but wonder how many cheaters would fall off if crates and cosmetics were no longer sellable. The unfortunate thing about that is, considering the world of gaming in 2017, and the fact that profits are made off this model, I doubt we'll ever know for sure.

Csgo has cosmetics and crates and it still lingers with cheaters. But it's not to resell and flip the crates, just pure enjoyment of suffering

True. However, crates and cosmetics come in at a much faster pace than in CSGO.

This is why I don't really play PC games online, there just seems to be a lot more cheaters than on console.

I don't think the crates are the sole reason for it, I think when you have that many people playing a game you're bound to have lots of others that just want to troll people and ruin their fun. I'm sure a small percentage are in it for crates, but I really don't think that's the only reason. Though it is an awfully tempting one. My roommate made $375 off his first round of crates.

More like why avoid competitive multiplayer games

 

I miss the gold era of mmorpgs back on the past decade, nowadays it is disappointing, playing singleplayer story driven games or fully cooperative multiplayer games really is all we have left... I still play a fair amount of cs:go but only on casual mode as it much funnier.

Doubt it. People in Team Fortress 2 just ran alt accounts to farm until Valve basically rendered that impossible, and people hardly farm(ed) in CS since anything worthwhile almost never drops.

Are there any other kind of multiplayer games?

I can only think of a handful of cooperative multiplayer titles.

I worry about what games will look like in the next few years as companies try to push the acceptable boundaries of paid content. It'll be a pretty grim time.
