Both monitors on = no video lag. One monitor off = video lag

I have two lenovo monitors connected to a z270x ultra gaming motherboard via hdmi to dvi and dvi to dvi. The following was tested on both monitors.

 

When im streaming a video it runs fine but if i turn the idle monitor off then my video begins to lag and become unwatchable. The mouse is unefected but i cant pause or click on things when it lags. However if both monitors are on then the problem never comes up. 

*i like to watch videos in full screen and it also helps to make it dark in the room as well so i would lime to be able to turn off the idle monitor without these lag spikes.

i would appreciate any help.

 

specs

gigabyte z270x ultra gaming motheboard

i5 7600k cpu 4.2ghz OC

Corsair Vengance 3000 Mhz ram

(2x) lenovo 1080p 21.5” monitors

Does it matter which monitor you turn off or does it happen regardless of which one you turn off?
