Any distro can be customized to your security likings. That's what I would do as I would trust it more

Qubes installs encrypted onto you hard drive directly, and then runs everything inside virtual machines. There's basically no way to compromise the physical OS on the drive, and you can just use cloned VMs to do whatever it is you're doing. i've seen it used for batch testing antivirus programs and known malware. Everything is contained in the VM, and if something goes bad, you just delete it and start over.

I use this on my laptop.

Is it secure? Mostly. But "basically no way to compromise the physical OS on the drive" is far from correct. Look up "Xen hypervisor escapes" and all of those are vulnerabilities that would be likely to defeat an un-updated Qubes install.


Your other option is OpenBSD, which is a Unix style OS. Qubes goes by "security by isolation" while OpenBSD goes by "security by constant re-evaluation". It does not, however, have easy support for Whonix. You would have to handle Tor yourself.

Basically Qubes is just for VM Ware, which I do not use. So after two hours of installing and formatting I got Tails to work. For my Disposable Dell Inspiron I had to boot into boot menu, select legacy boot which automatically boots from external drives. The system reboots, and after a minute or two the system boots from the drive. We didn't discuss that much, and now I finally have my system booting from a persistant storage encrypted USB stick. The drive will NOT work unless it is labeled UUI F:(This was for me) After bootng from the first drive you go over to applications on the top left, down to system files and then select Tails installer. Then you select the drive, NOBODY MENTIONS THIS BUT MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT USB PORTS YOUR SYSTEM WILL BOOT FROM. On my dell the left side USB next to the headphone port and the USB port next to the CD drive are the two ports. I believe the computer is made this way to utilitize only two ports at maximum speed. I have see diagrams of this somewhere, but the other two USB ports will NOT work. I do not know how to identify which ports will work other than testing it out first hand. Please excuse any grammar issues as it is almost 2 AM here. Further more, as the pain in my wrists increases, I suggest the drives be at least 16 GiB or more. The minimum is 8, but I have found other programs to be very iffy about this and formatting reduces the GiB on the drive. I am now using my USB 3.0 USB C drive. After installing the program onto the second drive, power down the system and unplug the first drive that had the ISO file imaged onto it, then keep the second USB drive plugged in and reboot the system. Tails is an exception program as I did not have to do this when booting Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya. Some files and attachments are different but still this is slightly lighter than MintOS 18.2 by .2 GiB. I chose Tails because I wanted a private and secure OS that is a Tor based OS. If you have any questions please message me and I will respond as quickly as I can.

Because use cases are different for every person and not everyone is on the same knowledge level. I didn't want to explain what I had to say at a 5yo level just because it was public on the thread, nor did I want to write a massive thing aimed at one person's use case and then get different questions about it from different people. secure and anonymous are not the same thing. 

 

as said qubes for security and tails for anonymous. Tails boots from a usb, doesn't touch the hard drive and clears ram when you shut down.

remember that  anonymity  isn't just down to the os. The times you're online, the sites you visit, the usernames you use, the way you type can all be used to profile you. 

 

You need to change a lot to stay anonymous.

I like Windows. It has good secure private feature buttons as well as browsers giving incognito. Bitlocker encryption is also stupendous at keeping your data stable.

except that windows sends lots of data to Microsoft, browsers like google chrome "phone home" about how you're using the browser on the note of incognito, it only keeps what you visited private from other users of the computer. Your ISP can see what web sites you visited and when and for how long, the websites you visit can all see your ip which can be linked back to you.

ubuntu and Firefox :) I'm not looking to be invisible on the internet I too don't want to be an item. 

 

I tor set up on ubuntu so I can just change the proxy settings of the application or network and have that layer.

 

This doesn't work for the terminal, tor come with torify which acts as a wrapper, 

  

sudo torify apt update

 

for example

Make sure that you always have a DNS available then, because otherwise systemd will be querying the Google DNS :) (assuming you're on Ubuntu 16.04 or higher)

That Windoze comment was 1001% sarcasm

 

btw I looked into Qubes-OS and it's amazing! I've been doing that kind of stuff with VMs on Mint for ages (different VMs for different things - no firewall VMs or Tor or anything fancy like that). Didn't know there was a distro dedicated to VM management like that! I suspect I will be switching over to Qubes in the coming weeks, if I find the time and if it all works well on my hardware.
