Hi,

I'm going to upgrade my Haswell-based PC to a Ryzen-based one. I had an i3 4130 paired with 8GB of RAM, which is no longer enough now that I'm learning video editing. At first I wanted to buy a Ryzen 5 build, but I would need more time to save money. Now I'm considering going with a Ryzen 3 build, then upgrade it along the way. I want to start with this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 3 1300X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($129.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus - PRIME A320M-K Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($56.56 @ Amazon)
Memory: Crucial - Ballistix Sport 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($34.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $221.54
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2017-10-12 14:57 EDT-0400

I'm considering getting adding an extra 16GB RAM stick in 6 weeks or so, for a total of 20GB. Is dual-channel a big deal in this case?

The next upgrading would be getting a Ryzen 7 or equivalent next year. Is that a good plan?

Thanks

I would get an R3 1200 and a B350 board.

That way you can OC it (if you are lucky) further than the 1300X (stock cooler is fine for that) and once you get a better CPU, you can OC that as well!

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

Well the issue here with your build is RAM, its going to be a struggle to do video editing with only 4gb, also your really going to want 16GB in the future so I recommend if your only going to get 1 stick of RAM at least an 8GB stick then you can add another 8GB stick later.

Well I'm not an overclocker so I'd rather spend some extra money on the CPU than on the motherboard.

Actually I created a thread about Black Friday last night and it seems there isn't a lot to expect from it, especially on this relatively cheap hardware.

Ok, i get that, but it will get you more for your money. At least if you are prepared to spend a bit of time with it.

It's not that hard tho, and with a stock cooler there's not that much you can do wrong.

Read some guides and just give it a try, at least if you want to.

Anyway, in the end you decide what you want to do :P

have you considered buying a used i7 4790/4770? its 4 core 8 thread and you dont need to change motherboard or RAM. And it will be plenty of power for entry level video editting.

I did, pretty much all day actually. But they cost around $350 new, and $250 used on average. That's still a little more, with no upgrade path, and more importantly, I'm considering selling my old hardware and get $150 - 200 out of it if I include the CPU cooler, motherboard, 2 RAM sticks and CPU.

RAM goes on sale though. The board might go on sale, or there might be better hardware for the same price.

There's no way for anyone to know what will go on sale, so if I were you I'd just wait.

Yeah you go buy 2 sticks of 8Gb sticks and your board only has too slots of RAM, well looks like your only using 16Gb. Its going to be better just to buy 1 8GB  stick now. That 4GB will be become obsolete unless later you only buy 1 stick of 8Gb and stick to 12GB of RAM, which is an option.

The board supports up to 32 GB so I can buy a 16GB stick later on.

My ADHD would be so triggered if I saw a 4GB stick next to a 16GB stick.

Welcome to the ghetto LOL. Actually that's why I asked if dual channel was a big deal in my original post. Would it impact performance if the frequencies are the same?

Ultimately I would replace that 4GB stick with another 16.

OK I'm finally going for a better motherboard since I need more RAM slots.

Looks good to me, you'll also be able to overclock. I'm not a fan of the X series since most people can get a better or same overclock on the same non-X processors but its your choice.

I wouldn't be against saving $20-30 but I think that the 1300X is a good option because you can still overclock it and get an even higher frequency while running cooler than the 1200. Since I'll be using the stock cooler I'd rather go with this one.
