So right now I have a 4690k, 1070, and 8gb of ram. I'm thinking about upgrading to Intels 7th gen or Ryzen, I'm playing games at 2560x1440 and Ive picked up an oculus the other week. im not tooooo sure if I should upgrade my system tho. I've had someone offer 180 for my old cpu, motherboard and ram. if I was to upgrade I would have a budget of 450 (including what I sell the old parts for).

p.s. im gunna keep the 1070

My speakers dont even fit on or under my desk...PA's FTW

I7 4790K if you want a new CPU, just drop it in and you are good to go. spending money on a 7th gen upgrade over 4th gen is really not worth it. either way dont upgrade unless you really feel that you arent getting the framerates you want

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Honestly, that looks fine to me. Not sure what kind of gaming you're doing, but the 4690k and 8gb of ram should be plenty, and the 1070 should still dominate most games 1440p for a while still. Might have to turn off the fancy settings, but should run well for quite some time

what GPU would you recommend

If you really want the best, 1080Ti

Otherwise, maybe a 4790K as @Bananasplit_00 suggested but that's about it.

Maybe another 8GB of RAM but that's only if you're running short already.

I personally think the only thing worth upgrading to would be a 1080 or a 1080ti. Another over isn't worth it, and obviously you don't want to downgrade. Although, Unless you sell your 1070 for what you paid for it, It (IMO) wouldn't be worth it, unless you REAAALLY want to upgrade

I was thinking about just dropping another 1070 in it, or would I be better of selling the 1070 and going for a 1080ti

Okay, I will, and always have, do not recommend SLI. 1 more powerful card is always better IMO. Also, As a 1080ti owner, they are pretty great, I regret not waiting to get a AIO cooler card, but the founders still lets me max most games at 60fps at 4k, But since I stream i just play at 1080p. But for 1440p you will have no problem running games maxed at 1440p, I would personally check out benchmarks (I'll look into finding one that compares After market 1080ti's) and see if the price/performance is to your liking

And me too man, Nothing beats some crispy 4K Ultra-settings gaming. ;)

i7-4790k, if you want the advantage of hyperthreading. Upgrade to a gtx 1080 and add in an extra 8GB of RAM. Well considering that you have a budget of $450, gtx 1080s are in that price range, the other upgrades such as CPU and RAM, are others to consider in the future if you want. The older haswell based i5s are still good performers when it comes to gaming performance and if you upgraded to a 7700k ($300) with a Z270 motherboard ($150), you are already within your budget in terms of price, so just upgrade the GPU for now and upgrade other components in your PC if you want to in the future. Only upgrade if you feel as though you are not getting enough gaming performance out of your current hardware.
