Cloning

So I have an old system with a fried mobo, a laptop, an empty, and some external drive enclosures and I was wondering if I could just cut and paste everything from one drive to the other on the laptop and still have the windows work on the new drive. Thanks in advance for responding!

No, even if it does you will run into issues sooner or later.

Don't be lazy and clean install windows the proper way.

You can drag documents and pictures and other files like that over from the old drive after installing windows on a different drive.

Cutting and pasting doesn't work with the OS, but you can use Macrium Reflect to clone the drive. You can also install Windows again if the key sticker is still on the laptop.

This only worked while the windows update was free

You can still install windows and use it for free without activating.
