Upgrade path? Am4 wins that, with confirmed support until 2020.

As for your choice, it would depend on how much editing you do. But given the cost of the 1800x, i would recommend the 8700k.

But not right now. Wait for the cost to go down a bit as supply increases.

If you're considering Ryzen, you should be looking at the 1700 and overclocking it. This will be more cost-effective, and IMO unless your GPU is something in a 1080Ti range and you're playing at 1080p, you shouldn't really notice any difference between an overclocked 1700 and an 8700K.

This might help a bit:

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-8700K-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-1800X/3937vs3916

They both have there benefits and different routes in the realm of upgrades, and that goes the same for form factor and motherboards. It honestly depends on what you are all looking for from your computer, if your wanting a build a little more information would be nice.

CPU: i7-4770k @4.8ghz---Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth z97---Ram 32gb Corsair Vengeance---GPU: 2 EVGA GTX 980 4gb way sli---Case: Corsair 600T White---Storage: 500gb 850 Pro & WD Black 4tb---PSU: Corsair RM1000

The supply isn't supposed to actually increase until feburary, which is when Zen+ is released

Zen+ should net you a 10% increase in clock speeds, given what we know about GlobalFoundries 12nm LP. 8700K JUST came out. Give it a couple weeks.

But as @Morgan MLGman said, you should really be looking at an r7 1700. Also, you'll probably be gpu bottlenecked in most cases anyway, making your cpu choice moot.

The 1800x is overpriced for what you get (which is why you should get the 1700) and i7-8700k and beats it our price wise (even with the current elevated prices). The thing is as most people have pointed out AM4 is going to see continued support, the i7-8700k requires a new motherboard that will become useless as soon as 10nm comes out which is why many are upset about this new CPU. Your other option is to wait for the new 10nm next year when we get a new platform but its going to be a long wait.
