Fore Pure Gaming, 4 cores is all you need. It will likely be 3-5 years yet before we see true AAA titles taking advantage of 6-8 cores properly since this is "new" to the mainstream market and its here to stay.

Need 4, but it would seem six can be helpful if the ipc  and clock of said cores is decent and cache is plentiful

So 4 is enough but six would be good as well (8 doesn't seem to help atm though)

Ashes of the Singularity is the only game I'm aware of that'll have about 12 threads ready to work, but no more.

However the amount of cores you really need also depends on the overall processing power of the processor too. A PlayStation 4 needs its 8 cores more than a desktop PC needs 4, simply because the Jaguar core isn't very powerful compared to say Sandy Bridge or Haswell.

Whether or not games can issue more threads for work depends on how it's designed and whether or not it makes sense.

Hi,

Im just interested in how many cpu cores you really new for gaming purpose?

I know that most games can´t utilize more than four cores but are there any exceptions?

And when will games start using hexa- and octa cores ?

4 cores. 6 is nice but not needed.

4 cores is enough for gaming and these days, many AAA games dont utilize more than 4 cores. Since that hexa core processors are new to the mainstream and have been improved for games to utilize these extra cores, 8 cores doesnt seem to help when it comes to gaming. 4 cores running at higher clockspeeds is always faster than 8 cores running at slower clockspeeds.
