Immense trouble rooting/unlocking bootloader on Nexus 6P

Go to solution Solved by suchamoneypit,

I was pointed towards "NRT", Nexus Root toolkit. This tool worked amazing to easily do it. It had no issues with fastboot or detecting fastboot. Amazing tool. Still confused as to what was wrong, but this app got through it.

http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/

on a Oreo Nexus 6P.

No matter what I do, I get to this point and nothing shows my device as fastboot. 4jj1kwa.png

I've tried everything I can find on the internet. Ive reinstalled drivers. I've reinstalled while at the fastboot menu (Power button+vol. down). I've tried it on two different PCs. USB 2.0 and 3.0. I've tried it in recovery mode, regular mode. I've tried all the drivers out there and driver installing tools. I've done this on a windows 10 machine and a windows server 2016 machine, same results on both.

No matter what I do my device never lists in fastboot devices and because of this I can't flash anything or unlock bootloader. My device manager looks like this hd1SCIV.png

Im so stuck I don't know what is wrong. Can anyone provide some help? First time doing this is it a dumb mistake? It always lists when I do adb devices but never for fastboot.

Did you reboot your phone into fastboot?

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

turning off phone and then holding power button+vol down, yes. Same issue. Wont detect fastboot.

It displayed that menu where I can choose to boot, recovery, barcode, ect. I never found any menu explicitily saying it was in fastboot. Looking at video guides on "booting into fastboot" simply showed the power button+vol down and then it brought you to a special menu which I got to.

EDIT: Might also add, this device is stock other than updating latest updates. Never messed with bootloader or fastboot or rooting.

Do you have the latest drivers installed on your PC for the phone?

Is command prompt being ran as an administrator?

Is developer options enabled on your device?

Uhh..... I can't think of anything else.

When you reboot from android into fastboot, try making sure the cable is already connected before rebooting, rather than plugging in after rebooting.

oh ok... honestly I'm running out of ideas..

try using a USB 2.0 and not a 3.0 port

also check your usb settings in computer bios, maybe disable USB 3.0/XHCI in bios if you can

yeah I tried 4 different 2.0 ports and 2 different 3.0 ports on two separated PCs. Android rooting subreddit is confused as well.

maybe it's some sort of carrier locking crap, possibly your carrier has disabled bootloader unlocking. I doubt that this would happen on a Nexus device, but always a possibility. Where did you get your 6P? Try removing your sim card?

Wait, you didn't backup??

Bootloader unlocking always factory resets phones...

Here's another idea: Since your phone is showing up as a adb device, try

adb devices
adb reboot bootloader

or

adb reboot fastboot
