Will this motherboard overclock?

Hi, if you purchase a MSI Z270-A Pro, Socket-1151, will it be able to overclock an i7-7700k?

Yes it can. You shouldnt buy a 7700k now though.

Becuase the i7 8700k is very close from being released and it needs a z370 chipset to work on.

Coffee Lake is coming with 2 extra cores on i3s i5s and i7s with better overclocking (mildly, but still worth mentioning). Mobo arent compatible btw.

8700k is here in a few days/weeks, first signs are good tho. Decent overclocker, decent performance, basically better value for your money.

Haha, how do i miss this stuff.
Thanks guys, the pc is for my brother so i will let him now.
He is not that much into overclocking and such, but wants the opportunity now that he is using quite alot of money on the pc, but i guess more cores would not be bad. ;)
..and ofc, the fact that this way his pc doesent lose its worth so quickly.

Do we know anything on the pricing? Will it be more expensive for him?

There are rumors but expect the cpu's to be a bit more expensive, the first weeks after launch cpu's are always a bit more expensive.

I'm guessing (complete guess, no source!) 30 bucks more for the CPU is probably about right. Again, i can be wrong but that seems imo about right.

Expect spending about $100 more on their first launch. Prices should come down after about a month to being about $20-30 more expensive than Kaby equivalent right now.

I can see that the argument for buying an i7-8700k instead of an i7-7700k is the two extra cores, and 8 extra threads, but the base clock on the i7-7700k is higher than the base clock on the i7-8700? That seems a bit weird? ;)

2 extra cores, 4 extra threads, not 8 :P

The base clock of the 8700 is lower because it has more cores. You can (according to rumors) overclock it to 4.8-4.9Ghz (i think) which is very similar to clockspeeds the 7700k can reach.

I dont care if 8700k only has a base clock of 1GHz. It's overclockable anyway. Dont forget the K at the back though. They are two different chips. Early tests show that 8700k is good for 5 - 5.2GHz on 1.38V. Of course for the sake of lifespan you might make it run slower at about 4.6-4.8 GHz and 1.32-1.35V, but that means the single core performance of Coffee Lake is no worse, if not better than Kaby Lake.

The base clock is already high enough, it will work fine.

I doubt how long will the chip stay at default speeds though.

Aside from Coffee Lake, I wouldn't buy a 7700K anyway knowing what I know now. Went from a 4790K to a 7700K and my temps went through the roof. Piss poor TIM application on an already hot running chip creates problems.
