Solid CPU Platform that will last

Go to solution Solved by Atropos,

Thanks for all the replies everyone. :D I've decided to wait for x370 and see how it trades blows with Ryzen.

My FX-8350 is showing its age so it's time start considering CPU Upgrades. All I do is game, I don't plan on creating content, editing, etc.

My current considerations are the 7700k and 1700X. I understand the pros/cons of both for the most part. I would however still like the option to upgrade the CPU without changing motherboards in the future. So I question going Intel because I don't know how many more CPUs are going to be released on LGA1151. I was burned by my AM3+ AMD choice back in 2012 when I picked up my current rig and I want to avoid that happening again.

Opinions and thoughts on those two CPUs and respective sockets?

8700k, 6c12t. while it's still LGA1151 It will use z370, and will not be compatible with z170/z270  Releasing sometime october I think.

Personal build >  New-ish AMD main gaming setup

   PLEASE QUOTE OR @ ME FOR A RESPONSE xD

1151 will not get any more cpu's, or at least not with Z270. You are better of with the 1700

With this budget the most lasting platforms are AM4 (new cpus till 2020) or x99 (no more new cpus but the ultra high end will become cheap giving good upgrade options, ie 5820k now 6950x later)

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

@Atropos

There is no guarantee that new AMD cpu will use the current chipsets.

We already know the next release of Intel desktop cpu require a new chipset, z370. Given Intel's recent practices the chipset may last another generation.

Upgrading a top-end cpu does not usually make economic sense. By the time the performance difference makes a real difference, other component technology has usually proceeded to a point where its adoption will make a real difference. Consider, DDR5 should start to appear on desktop motherboards sometime in 2020. It will be faster, denser, and use less power than DDR4.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

AM4 seems like a very safe bet, but I can wait for the z370 chips and see how they hold up, I hadn't even considered x99
