Question about HDMI to VGA adapter

I bought that HDMI to VGA adapter (since I had no other way to connect my old monitor) and the screen has been much much darker than usual;connecting with VGA.

Is that how the converter suppose to work since it is changing digital to analog or I have a defective converter?

Usually inside your video driver you have a setting for analog and digital screens, which you might have to mess with to make it look how you want.
