1x GTX 1060, 2x 144Hz screens

AT0MAC

A buddy of mine have today invested in a second 144Hz panel and came to realize his GTX 1060 can only drive one at full speed at a time.

Seems odd to me, as the 1060 is a pretty good GPU.

Its even showing problems already from the beginning in Windows, not even in game.

For now he is just using the supplied cables, one DP and one DVI, so to me it sounds mostly like bad cables.

What do you guys say?

I don't think [single-link] DVI can supply 1080@144Hz.

Edit: Can you check if he's using dual-link DVI?

I think the quality for the money it gives is very good, I my self have a 1070 and that is obviously better special if you want to run Ultra settings in most games, but its also costing more.

So what you mean is that a GTX 1060 will not be able to do 2x 144Hz?

What game?  Overwatch in 720p?  No problem.  Witcher 3 in 4k, big problem.  The GPU can run 2 screens at 144hz, but can it run 2 screens at 144 FPS?  That is the question.

No, the idea was to game on one screen but to have a similar setup, so he can choose what screen to game on and use both for more normal work, were the 144 Hz is giving less strain on the eyes for extended periods of time

But the problem is that already on Windows desktop it gives trouble and will not run 2x 144

I think people are assuming 144Hz in games...

@AT0MAC Is this issue present at all times or during games?

Ah yes, sorry, no no 144Hz in general and as much FPS as possibe in game, I know it will fluctuate a lot on a GTX 1060 depending on settings, even does that on my 1070 (it is not a SLI 1080Ti afterall) so I dont expect he will be able to do miracles

Its present at all times, even on Windows desktop (the wallpaper just after boot)

one screen runs fine 144Hz over DP, the other on DVI only runs 60Hz with strange artifacts and colors, my guess its single link shi*t cable

I just looked it up.

To output 1080p content at 144Hz, you typically use a dual link DVI-D cable or DisplayPort cable. You can also use a HDMI 1.3 or higher cable.

Running 1080p content at 144Hz can be a very demanding task. Contrary to popular belief, a standard HDMI 1.2 cable can not be used to output 144Hz 1080p content on a monitor. HDMI versions up to 1.2 support the same data throughput as single link DVI-D. A HDMI to DVI or DVI to HDMI adapter is converting to or from single link DVI-D, as the video signal for these two is identical and it is just the adapter that is required (HDMI can carry audio, but this is lost with an adapter).

not sure what you really said there, but if you said that 144hz can

't be reached over hdmi 1.4 with 1080p, you're wrong.

i have hdmi 2.0 and it gets 144hz at 1080, i even overclocked to 155hz. same for 1.4 hdmi

Not caring about HDMI, pointing at DVI dual-link.

Resolution matters as well. I'm assuming that it's a 1920x1080@144Hz and not something with higher resolution.

Dual-link DVI should work with 1080p 144Hz.

You can also use DisplayPort.
