I am building a below 1000$ PC, is a 1080 overkill for ultra settings 1080p gaming and some light content creation (in adobe premier), and game development. I will use a ryzen 5 1600 or lower with the 1080 or the ryzen 1700 with the 1060 6gb.

So gaming, all sorts of games including super demanding ones like DOOM, light content creation and game development in UE4. Should I get a 1080, 1070, or a 1060 6gb, what are your thoughts.

P.S: If for some reason you want to know the other components, basically a B350 mobo with 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM.

P.P.S: Almost forgot, right now, I am using a laptop with a GT 630 in it, and when I build the pc, I want it to still work at lease for mid settings 60fps in like 4-5 years.

P.P.P.S: Again almost forgot, should I wait for the release for the 20 series, or "Volta" series GPUs, because I am afraid that any GPU I buy now will be rendered obsolete by the Volta series

THANKS in advance

If you can comfortably afford it, go for it. If not, get a 1070.

1080p 60fps or no?

If you're looking at 60 fps yeah it's kinda overkill, but for 144 fps it isn't.

Volta wont be coming fast, so dont worry.

GTX 1080 will be enough for at least 5 years at 1080p 60Hz ultra settings, most likely even longer. GTX 1060 6GB is only good for about 2 years at ultra before it starts to run out of power and you have to drop a bit to very high settings.

It's hard to recommend the 1070 though since a 1080 is 20% more expensive but also gives 20% more fps. Since prices usually step up a lot steeper than performance increase in high end parts, the 1070 is shadowed by the 1080 in terms of value.

1080 is not overkill for 1080p ultra, especially considering future titles maybe more demanding. I personally don't think Volta will be coming anytime soon, mid 2019 perhaps? And it will be more expensive as well. If you are in dire need of getting a gpu, get it now. If you think about waiting for a product that's not expected to launch for a year, you will keep waiting forever.

FOCUS MAN FOCUS! I don't need a 240GB ssd, I'll just get a 16gb optane, and for the ram, well, that will actually cost around 80$

Yeah optane is a crappy investment.  For $80 you could get a real m.2 128gb ssd over the optane's $50-$70 asking price.  Get a 128gb ssd/1tb hdd or even a 256gb ssd for $90.

1080 is quite weak. Would never consider it too much for anything unless you are playing old or easy to run games. Go for it.

The 1070 is a lousy buy at $425 or so for aftermarket versions. An aftermarket 1080 at $525 is much better IMO. Nvidia keeps cutting their 70 series cards down from the 80 series more and more each generation. Back when the 1070 was $450 and the 1080 was $650 the 1070 was the more compelling buy, but not now with the 1070 barely dropping in price while the 1080 is heavily discounted.

An optane usually costs around 40$, but I found it for 25$, but now it's gone! I'll see if I can get an OS on it, if yes, I'll have a boot time of like 2s (not really), or if I can't, I'll just use it as secondary cache since it really boosts HDD performance (excluding boot time)

Edited by ahmedhara
I made a mistake, the sale is gone and you're kinda right. I'm not sure if I'll even invest in an optane or an ssd

I'd get the open air card, eg the Windforce. Quieter and cooler.
