Need advice on selecting a power supply for my build?

Go to solution Solved by PCGuy_5960,
  1. Don't get a locked i5. Get a Ryzen 5 1600 with a B350 board and 3000MHz DDR4
  2. Don't get a VS PSU, they aren't very good. I would recommend a Seasonic S12II-520W or a Corsair CX-450M

Any PSU from Tiers 1,2 and 3 is fine though:

Hello. I am building a a new pc and im a bit confused about the power supply i should get for my computer, even after doing quite a lot of research on the internet regarding the topic. These will be the specs of my new pc:

Intel i5-7400
Gigabyte GA-Gaming B8 LGA 1151 motherboard
Gigabyte Geforce gtx 1050TI 4GB DDR5 OC
Corsair Memory 16GB (8GBx2) DDR4
Corsair Carbide SPEC-01 Case

I have not yet decided on the storage and the cpu cooling system but i am most probably going to go forward with a air-cooled system rather than liquid cooled. The pcpartmaker site states that my system will require 220W of power, and after adding storage and additional fans im assuming it would reach to 300-330W. I have carefully selected my CPU and mobo as i am aware that i do not plan on overclocking my pc. The gpu also does not require a 6-pin connector and can get power directly from the PCI port.

Now the best PSU option in my opinion is the Corsair VS450, which provides a continuous 450W supply and has 80plus rating, which i think is really good for its price. I have also looked at coolermaster products and Thermaltake Litepower products at the same price range but they do not seem as good as the corsair PSU. Both CM and thermaltake do not provide continuous supply specs on their sites.

If any one of you has a better product in mind or any advice on the build i would really appreciate it. Do you think i should get a higher/lower wattage PSU? Do you have anything to say about the Corsair VS450?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Please keep in mind that this is kind of a budget build :P

On the contrary; the VS450 is a rather terrible unit. Get the Corsair CX450M.

Mandatory "get a Ryzen 5 processor instead".

Get a ryzen 5 1600 paired with a B350 motherboard and some DDR4 3000MHz RAM. Having the benefits of overclocking will have significant performance increases when it comes to gaming. And also, taking into account that ryzen has a better upgrade path and is less expensive than its counterparts. At least get a 500W PSU.

Just because you've had one for a year, doesn't mean it's not crap. Spending another ~$10 to get a decent unit is worth it, no matter the budget

I have looked into a ryzen build but sadly a ryzen 5 1600 and a B350 motherboard exceeds my budget limit. These parts are more expensive in my country than their intel counterparts.

Maybe the R5 1400 or R3 1200/1300X would bring the price down.

It may have been fine for you for a year but the thing is, with a power supply that is much lower quality like the vs you end up with a higher chance of other components potentially dying from worse voltage regulation and ripple. If you're paying $700 or whatever for the rest of your pc why cheap out $10 on your psu?

Plus a better psu could potentially be used through multiple pc builds over the years, whereas a bad one would need to be switched out in a few years which ends up in you paying more.

What about a Ryzen 5 1400 or something instead? Or if you're not in a hurry, you could also consider waiting 3 weeks or so for Intel to launch their Coffee Lake CPUs, which will give you 6 cores instead of the current 4.

Given that Intel's 8th Generation processors will be releasing soon, buying a i5-7400 now would be a bad idea. I'd rather get a R5 1400 at the minimum or wait for Coffee Lake and see what that offers.

The point on the power supply, however, still stands.

What about the Ryzen 5 1400? Or, wait for Coffeelake, Coffeelake i5s will be much better than current ones. ;)
