Let's talk about NVIDIA's GeForce MX150 for a minute

14 minutes ago, D13H4RD2L1V3 said:

Well, I didn’t state that the MX150 was better due to the higher clocks. I just said that because it was interesting as the other Pascal laptop GPUs have lower clocks compared to their desktop counterpart, with the only other interesting GPU being the GTX 1070, of which the laptop version has more CUDA cores than the desktop version.

As for comparing it with a 1050, I did that because some 1050 laptops can be obtained for a reasonable price. They’re obviously a different animal, and people who want to game will look past the MX anyways. Just thought I’d mention it.

Ah ok. Misunderstood then. Well most of the time people will see an unrecognized series and inherently think it's inferior, MX being mobile centric. Whereas they see "GTX" and know there's business being made inside. Most of the mobile variants of the newer GTX arch in laptops are just custom boards to fit in the laptops. At least the original models anyway. They've gotten better at fitting full-sized boards in with better cooling and we're seeing more of that. Which is why the custom boards were made in the first place. The custom boards are capable of being clocked to the desktop frequencies, but will throttle much more easily because of the spacial constraints of other heated components around them.

Obviously if people recognize the GTX brand, the manufacturer would want to focus getting those models out the door moreso than the new and scary unknown SKU. So they'll advertise them more. Why you don't hear about them unless you have a specific use case for it. It's all in the marketing

The card is limited by its 64bit narrow memory bus and capped by the cpu. Those Intel U only have 12 PCIe Gen 3 lanes. The card only uses 4 of them.

Did a quick run of a simple game Cities Skylines at 1366x768 medium settings, average FPS is around 60ish with both GPU and CPU temps hovering around mid 60s to upper 70s.

Intel Xeon E5 1650 v3 @ 3.5GHz 6C:12T / CM212 Evo / Asus X99 Deluxe / 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 3000 Trident-Z / Samsung 850 Pro 256GB / Intel 335 240GB / WD Red 2 & 3TB / Antec 850w / RTX 2070 / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy X360 15: Intel Core i5 8250U @ 1.6GHz 4C:8T / 8GB DDR4 / Intel UHD620 + Nvidia GeForce MX150 4GB / Intel 120GB SSD / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy x360 BP series Intel 8th gen

AMD ThreadRipper 2!

And this matters how? PCIe x4 3.0, even when hanging off the PCH, should not bottleneck this card. Hell, it barely bottlenecks a 1080.

idk

There is a decrease in FPS when the card is running at x4, which is why minimum Nvidia will let the card slow down to is just x8. Tom's did a test on it a while back. HQ cpu have 16 lanes so maybe they run at x8?

If it barely bottlenecks a 980, it'll probably not bottleneck this lowly card. And yes, if wired correctly it'll run at x8.

idk

Don't really give a crap about bottlenecks. Never really bother me to be honest.

Just listing some important info on how the gpu is working with a Intel U cpu so other won't be surprised by it.

If it comes cheap enough, I'd likely be the market for it. I've been wanting a laptop for a while and considering that I'm inching closer to college, it'd be nice to get something that'd act as a decent secondary machine.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

  • 3 months later...

Sorry to revive this thread, not sure if it bothers anyone or anyone cares at this point.

I have the MX150 in my Spectre x360 15". To be honest I find it brilliant. In my tests this ultrabook marginally outperforms my old Alienware which had high-end gaming specs. I've been playing Borderlands 2 at max settings, minus PhysX.

I'm a sucker for professional laptops due to their design. I love the power current-generation gaming laptops have, but dislike the increasingly gaudy design. It's an attention screamer for all the wrong reasons.

This is exactly why I got the Spectre. I would love the power of a gaming laptop, but they're awful in most other ways. At least I can do design work with this laptop (display accuracy), and work on the go (decent battery life). The only gaming issues are that the ventilation gets blocked when it's on a flat surface, so I have to raise it, also keyboard ghosting, and lack of adaptive sync, so I have to put up with tearing.

Let me know if you guys have any questions.
