Sell my 970 and buy either a 980ti or 1070 (maybe a 1080) or wait for volta? I only run 1080p at 150hz, i like higher settings for games like rainbow six, at lowest settings i get around 108-120 fps

I would gun for the 1080, if possible.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

Obviously a typo, meant Volta.

Frankly if you manage to sell the 970 the GTX 1080 would be the safest bet for longevity given how Maxwell even though very relevant today will lose its crown for sure when Volta does come around and a GTX 1070 is a bit overpriced with the cheaper 1080's costing nearly enough the same.

The thing is AMD hasn't catch up, the GTX 1080 and GTX 1080ti still outperforms VEGA so nVidia is further delaying Volta as it makes no sense to kill Pascal when it still is the market's best offering, there is a thread about it:

1070 Prices are still inflated I believe, so I'd get 1080. IF only AMD controlled Vega prices a bit better.

The TITAN X is on brother's PC right now you can see it if you max the signature ^^

I'm not going x299 I'm waiting the i7 8700k finally pop up as I already have a buyer for the i7 6700 system, just a waiting game now :)

About your issue at hand, I do think that the GTX 1080 will be the best to go as it'll be relevant for very long period of time, even when Volta does come it'll trade blows with the GTX 2070 in worst case scenario which will be enough for ANY high refresh rate gaming at 1080p for the next 3~4 years without doubt.

X58 + pascal is just fine. Coming from a X58 user since 2009.

I have been throw my part of GPU´s with X58 and i am now on my last GPU before a total upgrade, but that dosent mean it cant take a high-end GPU, cause i am doing that right now.

With first a I7 920 i have been on 4 different GPU´s and all SLI setups and with that I7 980X i have now i am rocking Pascal in form of mighty GTX 1080 TI (nope its no joke), i admit at 1080P there are some sort of cpu bottleneck in some games where GPU load hangs around 80 % GPU load while exsample crysis 3 maxed out can hold GPU at 99 % load at only 1080P, but as you move up to 2560x1600 or 4K its the GPU that comes in as the bottleneck and konstand 99 % GPU load. And seriously who bay a GTX 1080 TI to play in 1080P any way?

If he´s Xeon is clokket in at 4.66 Ghz as claimed in he´s profile, he will be just fine with what ever he gets a GTX 980 TI, 1070 or 1080. But heck if you are up at 1080 level seriously consider one of the cheaper GTX 1080 TI (i dit the same and going to 1080 TI from GTX 970 SLI i had before is a blast), they dosent cost that much more than the most exspensive GTX 1080 non TI, but avoid MSI GTX 1080 TI armor throw because that cooler sucks ass. Just my opinion.

Here are some benchmark to prove that the so cald bottleneck so many claims X58 has is some what a lie. That single GTX 970 he has now is holding he´s CPU back.

For some comparison I7 920 @4.1 GHz + 2 x GTX 660 TI sli

Next I7 920 @ 4.3 Ghz + single GTX 970

3dmark_Firestrike_29-8-2015.jpg

I7 920 @ 4.4 GHz + 2 x GTX 970 SLI

3dmark_firestrike_rekord.jpg

I7 980X @ 4.7 GHz + 2 x GTX 970 SLI

3Dmark_Firestrike_I7_980X_4.7_GHz.jpg

And now for I7 980X @ 4.72 GHz + GTX 1080 TI.

3Dmark_Fire_Strike_4.72_GHz_GTX_1080_TI.

superposition benchmark with I7 980X and GTX 1080 TI

Superposision_1080_4K.jpg

And a last one userbenchmark

Then you all can deside if X58 is out or not. I say It's not quite time yet to put X58 back in the closet :D

Yeah all this mining crap is to blame for it i think. Well in my country GTX 1080 TI is not cheaper than GTX 1080, but the difference between one of the most exspensive 1080 non TI (there are even more exspensive non ti models, but then we talk watercooled models) to one of the cheapest GTX 1080 TI the difference is sure as hell very little. My country is by the way Denmark so currency is DKK in my country. I whas in this boat tripping back and fort between 1080 non ti and 1080 TI, but the price difference ended up going for a 1080 TI directly from EVGA EU and bay a EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 GAMING the model with 2 fans and sure enoufh its a freaking nice cards. Nvidia really dit make a great card with 1080 TI.

GTX 1080 non TI in more exspensive aircooled models.

As you can se price difference is nothing to talk about when we are up in price layer.
