Smudged thermal paste on heat sink is that okay?

Hello, I would like to know if it is bad to have the thermal paste on a heat sink smudged. I am building my first gaming PC soon.

btw I'm using Ryzen 3.

As long as there is adequate contact between the CPU and the cooler through the TIM your temps won't suffer. Unless you are going to be overclocking like crazy in which spreading the thermal compound can trap air bubbles in it decreasing its effectiveness very slightly. And as always, apply rules of common sense as well as thermal compound to your pc and you will be fine. ;-)

Do you have any of your own thermal compound? If not use your finger or a credit card to spread it evenly again.

nope

To be honest you can just plop it onto your CPU. the pressure from the clamp will spread the TIM around.

Nope, time to sell your entire computer I'm afraid...

For real though, you should never use the TIM that comes with coolers, it's usually really cheap stuff. Get some decent TIM and re-apply it if I was you...

I think that's a rather extreme advice given what the actual difference in temperatures is...

Nah, not to the extent of "never use stock thermal paste". It is fine.

Might wanna avoid using their stock tim. Its really hard to pry apart when you wanna change the tim.
