Why is RAM expensive right now, when is it going down

yea im looking up ram on pcpp 

 

and for 16 gigs at minimum everything is 100^o.O

ive posted this a couple times now

 

its been going up steadily since Q2 of 2016 due to supply issues.  NAND flash is getting more popular, so they are producing more of that and have taken focus away from producing DRAM.

Samsung factories have also seen power outages that have caused issues with production.

Micron having contamination issues and having to scrap 60,000 wafers.  (Although this should only affect LPDDR4 used in apple devices)

 

also smartphone manufacturers are taking a large portion of the supply as we're seeing an increase in smart phones with more ram these days.

 

we should see prices start to stabilize around Q4 of 2017 and start dropping sometime Q2 of 2018

one of the primary manufacturers of DDR4 had an issue with one of their factories that produces around 20% of the worlds supply from memory as well as some other supply issues

Micron, one of the major DRAM manufacturers, had to shut down one of their factories temporarily over the summer (July 2017) due to contamination.

Silcon wafers and equipment were affected.

 

Then there is the supply and demand situation, with both AMD and Intel systems using DDR4 memory now -- everyone building a new system is buying DDR4 RAM.

 

DRAM prices are projected to be high until 2018.

Price of SSDs are dropping all the time, a 120gb in aus just a few years ago was like 200 bucks and is now around 80ish for example. Sata ssds are quite cheap now

Much higher than they were a year ago.  In the US, you could get a 240GB one for $50 in early 2016.  Now they're $80 and up.  There has been a NAND shortage.

interesting, prices are still dropping in Aus, although we do pay alot of import crap and a price premium anyway so its hard to gauge the actual value of any electronics
