4 Gigabytes of VRAM or 6 Gigabytes of VRAM

I was planning to use the gtx 1050 for my computer, I asked a friend about it and he said that I need more than 2 Gigabytes of VRAM.  He recommended to me the 1060 which has 6 Gigabytes of VRAM but cost $290.  So I am thinking about the 1050 ti that has 4 Gigabytes of Vram which is $155.  Is it a suitable option or should I go with the 1060?

1060 is better but try to find a used 980ti first

Vram isn't everything...... just look up youtube vids on their performance and buy whichever will suit your needs.

VRAM is only useful if you like to crank up the texture detail, resolution, and traditional anti-aliasing methods like MSAA. Otherwise if you're at 1080p, you can skirt by with 4GB and have everything still look great.

2GB is quite limiting now, The GTX 1050ti has 4GB of RAM and is at least powerful enough to use some of the extra 2, depends on the games and the textures. The GTX 1060 6GB is the obvious choice for the most powerful, but what resolution are you using and what's your CPU?

im able to play a lot of games with 2gb. it depends on what resolution your playing games at.

A GTX 1050ti will perform pretty well at that, between high to ultra depending on how old the game is, But the GTX 1060 6GB could probably max most games out at 1080p, so either is a good choice, it depends on how good your CPU is.

Here are a couple of comparisons.  For the 1060, 3GB vs 6GB has a pretty big performance impact (an increase of 10%-40% fps):

The 1060 blows it out of the water, with 80-90% improved synthetics, with consistently 40%-70% more fps.

The GTX 1060 6GB isn't necessarily better performing compared to the GTX 1060 3GB because of extra VRAM.

The GTX 1060 3GB uses a cut down version of the GP106 -- fewer CUDA cores, etc.

Thanks @-rascal-,

I guess I should've read more of the text on that comparison page.  10% fewer cores on the 3GB version, which explains the 10% lower scores.

I thought they were the same otherwise, like the RX 480/580 4GB vs 8GB, where the higher VRAM was pretty much just better for higher resolutions.

So yeah, VRAM doesn't do a lot to affect performance, assuming you have enough for the resolution you want to play at.  2GB is still on the low side though.
