1440p 144Hz gaming

TheOnlyNexus

Hey guys,

I want to upgrade from my current rig (R9 Fury and Ultrawide FreeSync 75Hz) to Nvidia, because Vega is just disappointing. As I'm in quite a tight budget I found these options:

Acer XB241YU (G-Sync, 144-165Hz, 1440p) currently on sale for 420 euros ~470$

And

Gainward GTX 1080 Phoenix GLH for 600 euros ~ 650$

Is this a good choice? Or would you recommend me another GPU/monitor?

Thanks in advance!

Monitor seems good. If you actually want anywhere near 144fps at 1440p in modern AAA games you need a 1080ti, and turn settings down to high.

Honestly I would pass on that monitor. 24 inches is too small for 1440p imo -> 27inch is the 1440p sweetspot and makes the whole gaming experience much better. Also its a TN panel -> the vibrant colors of IPS actually makes the upgrade even more worth it.

When I was recently in your position, I chose a 1070 and a PG279Q -> I can upgrade my GPU later on when I need more FPS, but I plan on keeping my monitor alot longer.

If you buy that monitor I think you will be dissatisfied with it quite soon.

I recently got that monitor, my thoughts at the time are at link below. tldr - good for gaming, bit small for desktop use.

I originally used it with 980Ti but that needed turning settings down to maintain a higher fps, much better now with 1080Ti. Of course, with G-sync you don't have to rely on capping at 144 to prevent tearing.

I would prefer IPS and/or bigger panel, but the price goes up a LOT for those.

get a 27'' Gsync 1440p monitor instead man...24'' is too small for that resolution...look at some from DELL they have one that is cheap it's a TN monitor but the colors are still very good on it and it's very fast...and if you have to go with IPS or more expensive monitors drop to a GTX 1070 it can still deliver a very good 1440p experience.

I'm in a position where I'm looking to upgrade my monitor, I currently have a 1080p 60hz(rip) and a gtx 1070,

would a 1440p, 144hz GSync be good?

I'm wondering if 1, will the 1070 reach 144hz in games like overwatch and 2, if it doesn't is it worth the GSync or should I go for less refresh rate monitor..

Battlefield 1, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Fallout 4, The Division. Big budget games targeted at beauty.

Overwatch is an Esports game. They are meant to run great on even low end computers. Examples being Overwatch, Dota 2, League of Legends, Starcraft 2, ect.

1000€ on a "tight " budget? :D

But as said before, the 1080 actually struggles to deliver 144FPS at 1440p.

I have a Zotac GTX 1080 AMP on a Dell 1440p 144Hz monitor and am currently playing Prey, averaging at 130fps with everything on max except for shadows (only high).

That's still good numbers but to reliably provide 144fps, go with a 1080ti.
