power supply noob asking "for a friend"

Hey guys!

What happens when I put a 800 watts to a computer that supposely requires 520 watts?

do that overcharge the computer?

does that actually make damage to the computer?

or is better to have a higher voltage?

So, this is a confusing topic for a lot of new people. PSUs are not a battery. They act as an intermediary between mains power and your pc. The 800W label on your PSU means it is rated to give 800W of that mains power to your computer maximum. If your PC requires 520 watts, you probably don't need a 800W power supply, as 700 or 750 is fine. Long story short, 800W is more than enough for your PC.

The PC will only use up to 520W. Why do you have/want/need an 800W PSU?

it will just use the power it needs. 800w means it's the maximum output it can supply. anything from 0w to 800w will work with an 800w supply

nothing happens, it just takes 520w from the psu.

as a note it's often better to get a better lower powered PSU than a higher wattage crap one.Same with efficiency's( 80+ gold,titanium etc.)

Yep.  Don't get something like a KENTEK 850W or one of those "800W" PSUs from Savemart for < $60,  You might as well just throw a grenade in your PC.
