CPU Cooler Fan Noise Issue

Hi,

I have Cooler Master Hyper 212X CPU cooler and it's been 3 years. Now the fan is making some vibration noises[I think], it's very loud....

Is there anything I can do besides buying a new fan?

something might have gotten lose. Try detaching the fan and putting it back on, making sure nothing is in the way

A good idea. Also, try switching everything off and spinning the fan 360 degrees by hand to check that the rim hasn't deformed from heat stress or anything. This could be causing the fans to rub against the "cowling" while rotating.

There is nothing between the fan. But touching the spinning fan works stops the noise for some seconds, I know I shouldn't do it...

That's because you are absorbing the vibrations. Try checking the heatsink screws to make sure they're fully tightened. Sure, it's been 3 years but it's worth a check.

I meant the ones on the bracket (cpu), but yeah, try tightening all screws on it.

CPU brackets are so tight that my motherboard is bent.

Whoa, that isn't good. It probably isn't the source of the issue, but I'd fix that. Which way is your Hyper 212X facing? Is it pushing air towards the back, top, or bottom of the case?

So towards the top of the case? If your ram clearance allows, try turning it to face in a different direction, and make sure no part of the cooler is touching the sides of the case, or any other parts.

I've deattached the fan from cooler and it's on. No rattling noise.

So, my cooler is vibrating?

If the fan/a wire vibrating on the cooler in that case?

Bizarre. Have you tried mounting the fan on to the heatsink in different orientations? E.g upside down, left, right.

Yeah I saw, but given the situation, it's literally the only thing I can think of at this point.

He said that when he took the fan off and switched it on it was silent. That leads me to believe it has to be something to do with the way the fan sits on the heatsink, since a heatsink can't vibrate on its own.

That's what I was getting at really, it's probably not but it could be a loose fin on the heatsinc vibrating from airflow/fan collision?

He could but it wouldn't really be a fair test if it's not the same size/has the same mounting for the heatsink 

 

then again it wouldn't be if it's just his mates fan (unless they have the same cooler)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Hyper 212x can take any 120mm fan bc it has a bracket to connect the fan and heatsink. So yeah, I think he should be fine with any 120mm.

Yay that was a guess  If only I could get my hands on his cooler in person and fiddle with it...
