MSI lightning pcb for the radeon r9 290x revealed!!!

MSI-Radeon-R9-290X-Lightning-PCB-front-8

MSI-Radeon-R9-290X-Lightning-PCB-back1-8

As you guys can see its a pcb, there are chips and shit, its matte black. From the looks of it, it looks like 4gb vram .Its got a 12+3+2 phase power design which is nice as well. The solder points of the crossfire bridges are now completely gone(its like evolution in genetics for gpus). There is also the v check points so you can measure all the crap that you want. Lastly two 8 pin power cables required(optional 6 pin for memory)

btw outputs are two dvi(no analog support anymore), hdmi and full sized display port.

Holy crap, two 8 pins AND a 6 pin? How much power do they intend on feeding that card? That's a maximum power draw of 150+150+75+75 = 450W as per PCI-E specs.

The reference only needs an 8 and a 6.

Looks more like 2 8 pins and a 6 pin are needed.

Also it's still only 4Gb of ram, it's the same amount of chips as on the reference PCB, so unless each chip is double the density it will still be 4Gb

The 6pin isnt needed, its optional addon, im sure people are most likely to use all of them anyways, the 6 pin is designed to only power the memory

If they are using a 6 pin just for the memory, I'm guessing they want to see major memory overclocks being reached.

With a good cooler, quality power delivery, unlocked voltages, binned GPUs. Should be a beast, especially given that 290x reference benchmarks are of cards that are throttling down ~15% which means as much as a 300Mhz difference with an overclock.

The display port can handle 3 monitors here so you must daisy chain, each dvi can handle two 1080p screens so maybe but cables will be messed up.

I know but I prefer 6 actual outputs.

many people do, i guess there is a reason somewhere, many people dont like display port due to its support even with it being superior, its a shame, maybe the 780 ti version will be different.

And let's just hope MSI doesn't put a pricy premium for the lightning cards... Lol

I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

This was long loooong overdue !

Agreed, pity they didn't show any shrouds around it, whether improved or not, would be good to see an image.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

This thing will be crazy expensive I guess.

Atleast it should have a cooler that's better looking than the TriFrozr

144Hz goodness

Is there another GPU that uses an optional power connector just for the memory? I've never seen that before.

GOOD. Because of the eyefinity six, I couldn't hook up my 1440p monitor with dual link dvi, because the card didn't have dual link. I would have had to spend $100 on an active adapter

Finally my Santa hat doesn't look out of place

it will only have 2X8pin on the standard card out the box. the extra 6 pin bit on the pcb will be for sub zero people to solder an extra 6 pin on for ln2.

Yeah, but how many monitors do you know of that have a DisplayPort out port for daisy chaining?
