In computing a thread is just a pipe that data can be processed through in a sense. So a core i7 has 4 cores but 8 threads. It can process 8 things at the same time (sorta). A core i5 for example has 4 threads and 4 cores so it can only handle 4 data pipes at a time. Thats a really bad example but its good enough.
