LTT in HDR?

Hi,

A short and maybe as dumb question.
Will Linus Tech Tips start uploading Youtube content in HDR anytime soon? I really appreciate the new better 4K content, but i suspect some more gains when HDR is included as well.

The issue is threefold:

1) Mastering monitors for HDR content are stupidly expensive and all of LTT's displays would have to be upgraded and calibrated. There are some cheaper options that are coming out now that they could use more casually but...

2) A very tiny percentage of their users currently have HDR support and it can cause standard range devices to display it weird in certain cases unless you take the time to edit it for both, greatly increasing workload.

Keep in mind, most YouTube viewers are on phones/tablets or computer monitors where HDR isn't available. TV usage is picking up, but still isn't anywhere near as widely used as phone/tablet.

3) It would be a huge amount of extra work in the editing stage of video development, meaning it has a massive extra cost for little real gain.

I totally see them doing it in the future once the editing software and hardware has a bit of time to mature, especially since their b-roll camera supports it. They seem to want to push into better recording tech to make more eye candy.

On the other side though afaik unless something's changed from their past "how it's made" videos, their a-roll camera doesn't, their editing software has issues with it, and they don't have colour grading/mastering monitors for it, so I wouldn't expect it any time soon.

And of course, I like to thank anyone in the Linus team, if reading, for all great videos. I'm a long time subscriber even tough this is my first post.

(Sorry for possible spelling and grammar issues in this post).

The only possible reason that LTT don't release video content in 4K is because not all their viewer have 4K monitors. 1080p is still the standard, will probably change to at least 1440p in a couple of years.

I don't think thats a really good reason. LTT is very much a innovative and tech forward channel.
All (not crappy) new televisions support 4K and HDR and most LTT viewers will have a good television or will get one if buying a new TV today.

I'd say 4K is standard for content viewing today (and it's not about uploading 1080P content vs. 4K).

Gaming is another thing.

they do release youtube stuff in 4K, but thats all about being able to use the higher youtube bitrates, not actually about the pixels.

on topic: quite simply put, if the time required to implement the latest and greatest feature into their videos takes more time and money to implement than they will gain from it, that'd be a pretty dumb buisiness move.

i'd say wait a couple more years or at least until around 20% or more people have true HDR monitors (capable of 1000 nits and let's say 80%+ of Rec.2020 color space). HDR isn't just about higher brightness and contrast, can't just put more powerful leds inside and sell as HDR

this will allow for various competing  hdr standards to settle down, right now it's sort of like hd-dvd vs bluray. .. and will also give open source developers ...ffmpeg, x264, x265, the future codec made by Alliance for Open Media (AOM),,,
