High temps with a good cooler with and i7

I have the i7 6700k @ 4.6 1.35v and my cooler is the grandis xe1236. I have it at 100% fan speed but when I run any stress test (aida64, OCCT, H.264 test etc) I get crazy high temps like 80+. I have re-seated and re-applied the thermal paste 4 times now. At first I put too much on and I saw a decrease in 6C when I put less on but it's still at 80C and I don't understand why. This cooler is meant to be as good the H5 universal yet even the hyper 212 can do better according to tests I've seen online. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You probably have bad thermal interface inside the chip, you may need to de lid.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that.

strange, although not completely absurd due to you pushing 1.35V through the chip.

you might just have a bad TIM inside the CPU. nothing you can do about that other than delid, and since you aren't at throttling level yet, I'd just live with it if I were you.

Just FYI 80c is totally safe

I know but 80+ is too close for comfort. TjMax is 100.

how are your temp without the overclock at stock speeds?

that would determine if you need to de-lid or not

It get's into the 70s when the benchmarks start but then reaches up to 80, never beyond that. That's at 1.28v.

so if your temps are more or less the same at stock vs OC

it sounds like you just have a bad chip

I would personally try to get the chip RMA'd or replaced if its still under warranty

and/or i would try a different cooler

and/or just run it at stock speeds, 6700k turbos to 4.4ghz on its own anyways, you wont notice a huge difference

You're thinking of a different chip - The 6700k turbos to 4.2. I'll see if I can get it replaced. Thanks.

Bad thermal interface isn't valid reason for RMA, even if you'd go directly to Intel. Its working, though not OC'ing or running cool under stress load. In other words, its working like it should under normal circumstances. 80C under stress is still good, though bit high considering cooler. My personal max limit during stress test is 87C on hottest core. That leaves 18C to shutdown temp for this CPU (105C). If you would run normal operation, lets say render video, are you seeing as high temps?

While rendering a 4k project I do get 80+. That's why it's so concerning.

And thats without OC and leaving volts auto too? You might try ask Intel support about it. But in past it still isn't valid reason.

Yeah that's at stock (aka auto).
