New Used Gaming PC

Hey, my friend wants to have a gaming pc. We looked on ebay and didn't find anything what we wanted. His max budget is 350USD. Any recommendation of what we could get? I thought about an used xeon CPU but I'm not sure how good they are for gaming.

Look on eBay for a Sandy Bridge i5 PC for 100$ or less, get the RAM to 8GB, then you have more than 200$ to spend on a GPU, go with a GTX 1060.

 

EDIT: Don't post eBay links here though, not allowed. And if you find any Ivy Bridge i5s or higher for a bit higher, go with that, not sure if the Sandy Bridge CPUs bottleneck a card like that.

1060s cost more than 200$ and he would likely be getting a really old i5 from the 1st gen era or a cheapo dell pre built for 100$. Sure maybe it's possible to find a half decent system for that price but it's unlikely.

You can build a 1080p gaming PC with 350$ even with new parts, which will perform a lot better than a console.

I didn't say 1st gen, I said Sandy Bridge...

I don't know how old this friend is but he can always get a job. If he's young maybe pick up a paper route or do extra chores around the house and ask his parents for a few extra $ here and there.

350 is pushing it. Likely hes going to want to play a few newer games too. I personally wouldn't recommend a gaming system for under 600$ simply because you severely limit yourself. At that point you might aswell buy a console.

A GTX 1050 can certainly fit in there, maybe even GTX 1050 Ti, you're saying that is similar to a console? Nearly every game can play 1080p on a GTX 1050, even if there are VRAM limitations.

And that is far from ideal. Have you ever tried to add hardware to a pre built? It's not always possible and when it is sometimes there are power and or compatibility issues. it would make much more sense to spend a bit more and just go full custom even if it's with used parts.

Honestly I would go for a gtx 1050ti that doesn't have a 6 pin power connector if they are buying a old oem system as they often don't have a psu that can support 6 pin power connectors.

Again, that's why I said there are compatibility issues. Usually, if the case is a mid-mini tower and I run up compatibility checks on the PSU and MOBO, everything will be fine.

That's a crap teir psu that I wouldn't let touch any of my hardware with its horrible voltage regulation and ripple suppression. Better off just getting a 1050ti that can stick into any oem no problem or even a used 750ti if they are on a real budget.

Does $350 include the peripherals, monitor, etc or does he already have those?

If putting into a prebuilt, some motherboards don't use standard PSU pins.
