So I just picked up a Ryzen R5 1500x for my girlfriend's build, and I have the weirdest issue.

I went with Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2400 ram for this build. 2x4gb dimms.

Windows WILL SOMETIMES MAYBE boot with both DIMMS installed. But It's only happened 3 times since I put it together.

With 1 DIMM it works fine. Regardless of which DIMM I use or which slot I use it in. If there's one, it boots.

Can anyone help?

MSI B350M Gaming pro motherboard.

EDIT: The 3 times I've gotten it to boot into windows with both dimms installed was after booting in with 1 dimm, installing all the driver software for the whole computer fresh, turning it off and installing the second DIMM. I thought it was fine but then I went to overclock and had to wipe my cmos. Back to the 1 dimm issue.

Hi, i'm having a similar issue, is it okay if i post it here?

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600x

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X370 gaming 5

RAM: Corsair vengeance RGB 3000Mhz (2X8GB)

GPU: MSI GTX 1080 Duke OC

SSD: Crucial MX 300 525GB

the Problem started after an Overclocking Attempt ( not the first, but this one i wasn't able to resolve it with a CMOS clear).

the PC is 2 weeks old and it ran with no problems (Until now).

Tried Each stick of ram in Each Slot separately results:

Stick 1: works only on the last slot.

Stick 2: Works on EVERY slot.

if i use the 2 sticks together the PC doesn't POST.

these results are with XMP On at 2933Mhz.

It sounds to me the board is incorrectly auto detecting the timings, see if you can get the full list of timings for both a boot with 1 stick and a boot up with 2 sticks and write them down and then compare that to the auto detected timings for when it stops working and manually set it to the working ones. Also start at 2133Mhz before you try for 2400mhz just to insure everything is working. CPU-Z will show some of them, you may need to find a compatible tool to show them all, or go into the bios and see if they change between boot ups with 1 and 2 sticks.

RMA your motherboard, MSI AM4 boards are shit, full of issues. Their RAM support sucks very much and latest 1.0.0.6 BIOS is completely broken.

so I literally changed the ram frequency back and forth a whole bunch, and I guess it just worked, cause it just booted again with both dimms.

Well it decided to work, not going to screw with it for a while, at least not until a few bios updates get pushed out.

It's a auto detection issue for sure then. You'll have to make note of the auto detected working settings and manually set them so they don't change.
EDIT: If you are running them at 2400mhz that is technically overclocked and you may need to mess about with the volts to get it to work.

Save your stress and lifetime, return it. Asus has currently the best AM4 motherboards, get B350 Prime Plus or B350-F Strix if you can.

B350M Gaming Pro is the worst AM4 board thats currently on the market.

Just to add some more to what he said, my experience with the Asus Prime B350 Plus has been pretty stellar. It's got my RAM at 3066 MHz, my CPU at 4.0 GHz, has a well-laid-out BIOS, and has some of the best I/O you'll find on B350.

Even though that pretty sexy-looking Strix B350-F board released recently, I'm still pretty happy with what I've got here. It's a solid part for the $100 I paid a few months ago.

Current Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

GPU: RTX 3080 Ti FE

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Tuf X570 Plus Wifi

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

PSU: EVGA G6 Supernova 850

Case: NZXT S340 Elite

Current Laptop:

Model: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900HS

GPU: RTX 3060

RAM: 16GB @3200 MHz

Old PC:

CPU: Intel i7 8700K @4.9 GHz/1.315v

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A

Strix has same VCore VRM, if you use Ryzen and dont care about looks or RGB the Prime Plus is great choice

MSi has a bunch of Memory related issues with their boards and you getting 2x4 instead of 1x8 which would be the right thing to do probably didn't help, with ryzen you want to narrow down the possibilities to mistake the most you can and working multiple small ram sticks is not a good idea.... at least outside the aesthetic purpose if that matter any thing at all.

I would also like to point out as a  couple have made that Asus got the most solid Ryzen boards so far, my brothers Prime Pro x370 works like a charm.

Thanks for all the replies!
Sorry this is late, but I did some digging around and sure enough, my kit of ram is not on the QVL for my motherboard. So I'm going to try and return my kit and/or get a new kit that's supported.

Do you think a bios update in the next few weeks could help?

Check the Qualified Vendors list for your motherboard and try disabling XMP altogether. That did help me boot in once. Otherwise, best of luck!

i don't think so, when i had B350 Carbon, the latest update broke the motherboard even more than it was (old agesa 1.0.0.4 new 1.0.0.6) so yeah, get an asus board.
