Just buy a Blueray player.

Just so you know, it's Blu-Ray, not "Blueray" or "Blue-ray".

Anyway, depending on what the OP needs, that's not a particularly useful answer. Some Blu-Ray players are cheap (I think I've seen them as low as $40 or $50) - others are very expensive. His exact needs will dictate what kind he needs, and whether it becomes cheaper to simply buy a console w/ an integrated Blu-Ray player.

Consoles can't really play Blu-Ray without soaking up as much power than a desktop. So if this is a concern, a standalone player would be better.

Looking at the GPU architecture, I don't even think the PS3 has accelerated H.264 decode for Blu Ray. It is probably brute forced on the CPU.

On another note, I have to wonder if the CPU would be capable of 1080P HEVC (h.265) decode if someone bothered to write an optimized decoder for it?

PS3 is a pretty solid blu-ray player and it's got a solid back log of games that you can get for next to nothing.

Actually, a main reason for my ps3 purchase in 2010 was the fact that a good blu-ray player was not much cheaper than the console.

Nowadays, the only reason why I have it in my living room is so I can play back those few blu-rays that might pop up for some reason.

So if you can pick up a very cheap ps3, go for it. It had been working very well for me
