is there a reason you don't want a dedicated GPU? laptops with 1050s are fairly heap and decently powerful. i imagine there wouldn't be much difference in price between a 1050 and non-gpu laptop

Where are you located? Dell has a 12% off sitewide promo at the moment, and they have plenty of 7700HQ's for under $800 (before promo).

This comes out to $690 after the 12% off promo (TWELVEOFF): https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/productdetails/inspiron-15-5567-laptop/dncwg2372h

It has a dedicated GPU though. If you want to forego the dedicated GPU for thermal/battery reasons, you can look towards this, but it's slightly more expensive at $733: https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/productdetails/inspiron-15-5567-laptop/dncwg2398h

EDIT: just realized these two options have the dual core i7 7500U, ignore these two options.

If you are a student, you can get a $150 discount, which would be the best deal at this price range. If you do find yourself wanting to game, then for $862, you can get this with a 1050 Ti: https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/productdetails/inspiron-15-7567-laptop/fncwf512s

Either way, it's something to consider for your budget.

It's not fishy. It's simply lacking an SSD entirely and uses a cheap TN panel. Keep in mind that this price is with a 12% off promo code (it's normally $980). However, at $862, you can pickup a 256GB NVMe drive for $100-$120 and still be below your $1000 budget. It's super easy to replace the HDD, memory and M.2 drive, as it can all be accessed with a single screw.

CPU thermals do get out of hand under intense stress, but the GPU is perfectly fine (given it's just a 1050 Ti after all). You can also undervolt the CPU and shave off a massive chunk for your temperatures. Having toyed around with this laptop, a 120mv undervolt shaved about 8C off my max thermals, and that was before replacing the stock thermal paste (something you may not want to do to avoid voiding the warranty). Simply use XTU to use a -100mv-ish core voltage offset, and you will be fine. In my testing of many laptops with the 7700HQ, I've yet to see one not be stable with a -100mv offset, as they are volted extremely high out of the box.

If you do not wish to settle for that subpar TN display, you can spend $50 more for an IPS variant which is far better, but that might put you outside of your $100 budget after buying an SSD. For SSD options, if you absolutely need fast speeds, you cannot beat this price:performance: https://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-80mm-Express-PCIe-240GB/dp/B01M4OO1FT Just keep in mind, this SSD gets quite hot, even in a normal sized desktop with good airflow. Western Digital also makes a pretty decent alternative: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820250084&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker, LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

If you wish to avoid the PCIe heat, simply find the best GB/$ M.2 SSD you can afford, and go with that option instead. Either way, these laptops are hard to beat for the price. It's a shame you didn't show up sooner, as there was a deal for a laptop with a GTX 1060 6GB in it for $900 the other day on Amazon. Also had a 7700HQ. MSI chassis I believe.

As @Sierra Fox said, that one is using a TN panel.

It also uses a 1050 instead of a 1050 Ti. However, the trade off for twice the ram capacity and a nice large SSD would probably be a better value for you, as you didn't really intend to game in the first place on this device. Certainly an option to consider.

Notebookreview gave it a "76%" whatever that means. I've used it, and it's certainly fine for general consumer use. If you find yourself doing content creation that requires accurate colors and an extremely bright screen, it's certainly going not going to satisfy you. However, playing it indoors (without the harsh glare of the sun) and doing normal everyday tasks, it's fine.

perhaps a dedicated GPU would encourage him to game and thus start developing games

So if there is extra space in the budget it might be good to have one.

Pick either one of these, they both have ssd's and ips screens with your requirement of having a 7700hq

I hope I am not too late, but you may want to consider this an option:

http://www.eluktronics.com/w650kk1

4GB 1050 Ti (with optimus support), 15.6 inch IPS panel, and you can configure it to use a 7700 (desktop processor). Configured with the 7700, it comes to $980. The fact that it's a socketable desktop processor means it can always be replaced if it goes bad, unlike the soldered CPUs.

I am personally thinking about picking one up just to throw a delidded core i5 6600T in it. Would make for a pretty decent laptop for the price.
