3 Years without thermal paste

So today I found out that my thermal paste never came into contact with my CPU due to the cooler not being mounted properly.

This was the thermal paste that was already applied to the CPU cooler when it arrived. This also means that because I have never replaced it, my CPU has not had thermal paste for 3 years!!!

 

For anyone who is interested, after actually fixing the issue I saw a drop from 90°C to 35°C idle.

 

My question is how has it survived this long without breaking?

 

Also the best guess at how this CPU will die (when it does(probably soon)) can have it.

It has likely been throttling big time for 3 years xD congrats you will now notice a huge performance increase xD 

 

Its unlikely to be damaged. It throttles to prevent that.

 

What I'm most curious about is in 3 years you never thought "man this PC is shit"??! Also you disregarding temps of 90+?

The temperature has only recently gotten to 90 and I know this is the worst excuse but I really couldn't be bothered disconnecting everything. Also I had no thermal paste to apply so there was no point in taking it apart. The only reason I found out was because I was cleaning it out and installing a new fan.

yeah, it just throttled like hell.

 

it might have taken lots of years off the lifespan, but 40 years to 10 years is still okay. it'll outlive it's useful lifespan either way.

well 100c is pretty bad regardless. 100c for years on end does degrade stuff.

OP never mentioned 100 and said 90s was recent not always present. I would assume the cpu has plenty of life left but for the love of god cool it lmao xD that cpu must be like THANK FUCK I'VE BEEN ON FIRE FOR YEARS.

It's a cool little case study I'll give you that much. Because even if it throttled hard, it was probably still running very toasty most of the time. I'm actually pretty impressed. What CPU is it, if I may?

Im failing to picture the situation... did you take a picture?

I was also under the impression that CPUs will not boot at all if there is no thermal contact with the cooler, as it would overheat instantaneously. (?)

I didn't mount it correctly meaning that it never came in to contact with the CPU and just hovered above it     Cooler> Paste> Air> CPU

I'd wager it may last longer than you'd expect, assuming the safeguards worked. I'd give it a generous 3 or so years for a giggle.
