Migrating from one SSD to SSD

Tokega

Hi everyone!

I have bought an M.2 SSD which I will be picking up tomorrow and it is a Samsung 960 EVO 500gb.
My current Win10 installation is on my "old" SSD which is an Samsung 850 Pro 256gb.

I am trying to find out what my best option is: Do I keep the OS installation where it is? Do I migrate? If yes, can I only migrate the necessary OS bits or do I have to migrate the whole drive? Do I install fresh on the new drive and just copy over settings from my old C: ?

I'd love to hear your experiences and advice!

Kind regards!

download windows 10 iso (64 bit)

use rufus to flash it onto a spare >8gb usb

prepare all your data on your existing ssd to be nuked (this is the part where you back it up)

plug in usb, boot from it, erase your existing windows install, install onto the m.2 drive

don't install it on your m.2 drive with the existing install there, or with the drive plugged in if you want to keep the existing install working. windows will fuck it up (bootloaders and stuff)

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Thanks Themctipers!

Where do you recommend I download the ISO from? It feels like there's a lot of dodgy sites that offer it when I do a Google search for it.

You might be able to use a drive cloner to keep the OS and all the files.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
