AMD Vega Frontier Edition Benchmarked!

Source 1: posted by Ekin https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/800680-vega-fe-benchmarking-by-pcper/

Source 2: https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/Radeon-Vega-Frontier-Edition-16GB-Air-Cooled-Review

  • The Radeon Vega FE card is not explicitly aimed at gamers: like Nvidia’s Titans, it will not deliver the best performance per dollar.

    • This is AMD’s first attempt to target this segment (somewhere between gamers and professionals)

  • Gaming results:

    • somewhere between the GeForce GTX 1070 and the GTX 1080

    • 25-45% faster than the aging R9 Fury X card.

  • Professional workload results:

    • Splits the line between the features, performance and support that NVIDIA offers between its GeForce and Quadro products.

    • In most cases, the P5000 Quadro card will offer better performance but at double the price.

  • Price:

    • Air cooled - $999 - 300W

    • Water cooled - $1499 - 375W

  • It is the FIRST instance of HBM2 being utilized in a consumer graphics card

AMD announces new Ryzen Pro Desktop CPUs

Source 1: posted by Misanthrope https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/800331-amd-announces-their-new-ryzen-pro-series-of-desktop-cpus/

Source 2: https://www.overclock3d.net/news/cpu_mainboard/amd_announces_their_new_ryzen_pro_series_of_desktop_cpus/1

  • AMD has today announced their new Ryzen Pro series of Desktop CPUs, adding another tier to AMD's Enterprise CPU offerings

  • These new CPUs will offer Windows 10 Enterprise Security support, AES 128-bit memory encryption and a 36-month warranty.

  • The Pro series will come with similar designs to their existing Ryzen desktop series

    • comparable clock speeds and additional enterprise-grade features.

  • Ryzen Pro offers yet another advantage over Intel's i3 series of CPUs, as they lack Intel VPro Security compatibility.

    • This will allow AMD to offer both performance and security advantages in this market segment.

AMD Accidentally reveals Ryzen 3 Details

Source 1: http://www.anandtech.com/show/11593/amd-inadvertently-reveals-ryzen-3-1300-1200-details

Source 2:  http://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-3-1200-benchmarks-leaked/

  • AMD has announced Ryzen PRO 3 specifications, but it’s likely they’ve inadvertently also revealed Ryzen 3 1300 and 1200 specs as well.

  • It’s because the non-X PRO chips all have the same performance specifications as their standard consumer counterparts

  • Ryzen 3 is a quad-core CPU without SMT

    • 4 threads instead of 8

    • Ryzen 3 will use the same die as Ryzen 5 and 7: 4 cores distributed over 2 CCXs

  • Ryzen 3 will have the same cache structure as the Ryzen 5 1400

    • That means just half of the chip’s total 16MB of L3 cache is enabled.

    • Each core still retains its full 512KB of L2 cache.

  • TDPs will stick with the same 65W TDP as all but the highest-performance Ryzen chips

Ethereum mining uses as much energy as a small country

Source 1: posted by Ginger137  https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/800403-ethereum-mining-uses-as-much-energy-as-a-small-country/

Source 2: https://futurism.com/ethereum-could-be-using-more-than-a-countrys-worth-of-electricity/

  • Real-time index from cryptocurrency analysis site Digiconomist’s founder Alex de Vries shows that Ethereum mining is powered by an amount of electricity equivalent to that consumed by a small country

  • Household computers turned Ether miners each have blockchain transactions consuming at least 45 kWh of electricity.

  • The entire Ethereum network could be consuming as much as 4.2 Terawatt-hours (tWh)

    • Only a bit more than what’s consumed by the island of Cyprus.

  • One major reason for this is the power-hungry graphics cards involved.

  • This may not be the case for long, though: Ethereum has plans to move away from its existing energy-intensive mining algorithms

Apple beaten to punch on Under-glass Fingerprint sensor

Source 1: posted by WMGroomAK https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/799918-underglass-fingerprint-sensor-demoed-at-mwc-shanghai/

Source 2:https://www.engadget.com/2017/06/28/vivo-qualcomm-under-display-fingerprint-reader/

  • At MWC Shanghai, Qualcomm announced its latest ultrasonic fingerprint solution, offering:

    • integration beneath OLED displays (up to 1.2mm-thick) as well as aluminium,

    • functionality even when the device is immersed in water.

    • tolerates dirt and sweat on skin better than its capacitive counterpart,

  • Vivo's Xplay6 demostrated the tech:

    • The demo started off with a fingerprint registration process that requested the user to put their finger on a marked area on the screen, which was just above the old fingerprint button.

    • The user could then unlock the phone by touching that same spot using the registered finger;

  • Fingerprint recognition speed in this implementation was noticeably slower than the near-instantaneous unlock that now common on smartphones:

    • ~1 second between first touch and entering home screen

  • Vivo's demonstrators said the same technology could be applied across the entire screen, but that would significantly increase production cost;

    • instead, Vivo might eventually cover just the bottom half of the screen

  • The same tech was shown on the back of the phone's metallic body, allowing the phone to be unlocked even when placed in water.

Canada: Top court orders Google to block website search results

Source 1: posted by lisek991 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/800220-canada-top-court-orders-google-to-block-website-search-results/

Source 2: https://phys.org/news/2017-06-canada-court-google-block-website.html

  • Canada's top court has ordered Google to remove a website from its worldwide search results, in what some experts are calling a landmark international copyright protection case.

  • The original injunction had been requested by Canadian telecommunications equipment manufacturer Equustek Solutions, which successfully sued another company for relabeling its products and passing them off as their own.

  • But the company fled the country and continued to market the counterfeit products from an unknown location.

  • Google balked when Equustek asked it to go further and de-index all mentions of the offending company worldwide.

  • Google argued in court that it was not a party to the dispute, that such a measure was overreach, and "that there are freedom of expression concerns that should have tipped the balance against granting the order."

  • But the Supreme Court concluded: "Without the injective relief, it was clear that Google would continue to facilitate that ongoing harm" to Equustek.

    • "The only way to ensure that the interlocutory injunction attained its objective was to have it apply where Google operates—globally."

  • Some media groups, publishers, copyright organizations and civil liberties groups worried about the precedent it sets.

    • "there is great risk that governments and commercial entities will see this ruling as justifying censorship requests that could result in perfectly legal and legitimate content disappearing off the web because of a court order in the opposite corner of the globe," -David Christopher of Open Media.

  • The article reads like a review from an independent journalist, with no disclaimers within the article itself that it comes from AMD or is sponsored by AMD.

  • The only ad markers on the page were:

    • “advertorial by AMD” off to the side on the top right.

    • The author being named “Advertorial”

  • The article was posted directly in the “Reviews” section

  • Forum members disagree whether or not AMD crossed the line

Windows Update: Machine Learning Antivirus

Source 1:  posted by JohnnyCorporalTech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/799809-microsoft-may-use-ai-to-fight-cyberattacks-in-its-next-major-windows-update/

Source 2:  https://www.cnet.com/news/microsoft-build-smart-antivirus-using-400-million-computers-artificial-intelligence/

  • In its Fall Creators Update, Microsoft will use machine learning from more than 400 million computers and a wide range of data coming from its cloud programs such as Azure, Endpoint, and Office to create an artificial intelligence antivirus that can pick up on malware behavior

  • If new malware is detected on any computer running Windows 10 in the world, Microsoft said it will be able to develop a signature for it and protect all the other users worldwide.

    • The first victim will be safe as well because the virus will be set off in a virtual sandbox on the cloud, not on the person's device.

  • "If Word were to start allocating memory in big chunks, when it never does, we would be able to detect that. We built the machine learning models around common applications like Word."

  • The update will also bring new protections for the browser but only for those using Microsoft Edge.

  • The upgrade is coming to Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection, with new features like browser-focused Application Guard and cloud-related Device Guard and Exploit Guard.

No Privacy: Russia to ban Telegram

Source 2: https://www.engadget.com/2017/06/26/russia-ban-telegram-hand-over-data/

  • Russia's communications regulator has demanded Telegram turn over information about the messaging app and the company behind it or risk being blocked.

  • Founder Pavel Durov said that Telegram had also been asked to give the Russian government access to decrypt user messages, all in the name of catching terrorists.

  • Telegram, a favorite of the Vatican, has also been used by ISIS to spread a kid-centric learning app.

    • Though Telegram has made an effort to block ISIS channels, new ones are created frequently.

  • According to Durov, US agencies tried to bribe the app's team last year and gain some influence with the app’s creator.

  • Iran recently demanded that messaging apps like Telegram stop storing Iranian users' data outside of the country.

  • Durov said, "If you want to defeat terrorism by blocking stuff, you'll have to block the Internet."

Petya ransomware slams Windows PCs shut in massive attack

Source 1: posted by WMGroomAK https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/799413-latest-eternalblue-attack-notpetya-is-a-wiper-disguised-as-ransomware/

Source 2: https://www.cnet.com/google-amp/news/unprecedented-cyberattack-hits-businesses-across-europe/

  • The new ransomware is particularly dangerous because it doesn't only encrypt files, it also encrypts the hard drive:

    • It locks up both your files and your computer's file system.

  • There's also a hidden Trojan that steals victims' usernames and passwords.

  • The malware forces an infected PC to reboot as soon as it finishes encrypting files, so you'll see the ransom demands as soon as possible.

    • The malware is demanding $300 in bitcoin before victims can regain access.

  • Microsoft released patches for all Windows operating systems after the global outbreak, but people who've updated their computers could still be affected because Petya can also spread through Office documents a la WannaCry.

I wonder if AMD can cajigger some stuff on vega here and cafuffle some other stuff there so they can transform some of that compute performance into gaming performance. We'll see, at least it won't become boring any time soon.

It's funny that it's techpowerup of all outlets who did that sponsored deal with AMD cause a few years back they were actually blacklisted by AMD because of their "unfair" coverage of AMD products. Guess they wanna make up with AMD again - at the cost of their readers trust.

Gotta love how the AMD brigade is thumbing the video.

Getting pretty sick of this forum's massive love for AMD and hate for everything else.

Edit:

By the way, the graphs in the TechPowerUp article were flat out wrong. TechPowerUp edited the article and graph between it being published and it being shown on the WAN show. Here is how the graph looked to begin with. Please note that the AMD bars were longer even when they showed the same number for Nvidia. For example Nvidia has a few results above 60 FPS, but the bars were made shorter so that it looks like they did not get 60 FPS.

This is what the original graph looked like, with boxes added for emphasis.

In the WAN video, Linus says that AMD is not even talking about a higher-end Vega product right now. But starting at 20:10 of the PCPer Vega video, the AMD rep says that at SIGGRAPH "and we'll also be talking about our more higher end capabilities within the professional line with Vega for our professional Radeon Pro offerings, as well."

So, it sounds to me like they're going to exist.

Then why would the initial Vega Pro release be what it is? Well, Vega Pro isn't great in gaming, but is faster than a Titan Xp in its targeted work applications, right? Maybe 'better than an Xp in targeted work applications' was the mark AMD wanted to hit with the initial Vega Pro.

Edit: Vega isn't faster than a Titan Xp at targeted work applications across the board. I thought I'd seen something to that effect, before.

I dont think its AMD love, i did dislike the video, mostly because when it came to x299 VRM issues bit, i kind of assumed Linus or Luke might have something to say about it but no it was like 1min, told source and then moved on because melting VRM isnt a issue ? And looking at the comments most people were pissed that Linus just skipped whole VRM issue but then kind of shit on graphics card thats not really for gaming, for not being good for gaming (atleast thats what it will look like.) AMD Ryzen Pro topic was just confusing. I dont really get why it was even a topic or why would people get pissed about that because Linus and Luke didnt really talk about it, they just mentioned it then started talking about other things.
Many people dont seem to get that people are more enthusiastic about AMD Ryzen and like the RX-series and Vega, because they show that AMD is making a comeback and theres going to actually be something interesting happening in GPU and CPU market. And people are kind of pissed that now that AMD is doing something interesting, all LTT is seemingly doing is point flaws and glossing over Intels flaws, rather than being excited that AMD is doing stuff and things are happening.
I AM NOT SAYING THAT LINUS OR ANYONE AT LTT IS DOING THAT, THATS WHY I WROTE SEEMINGLY BECAUSE THATS THE PICTURE SOME PEOPLE WILL GET.

That graph looks mess up in general. It displays the difference between 50 and 63 FPS as smaller than the difference between 63 and 65 FPS.

First of all love all the people on YouTube trying to defend AMD, the AMD fanboys are so ignorant of the facts that it's not even funny anymore. I mean before when some random idiot saying something positive about AMD, people would've just ignored him or just told him that he's wrong.

These days the amount of idiots is growing at an alarming rate. Why can't people just accept that AMD isn't as great as their marketing team would like you to think, is beyond me.

Stop trying to come up with illogical explanations to justify why AMD's performance is so poor compared to the competition. Even on this forum it's present.

Everyone is so focused on what Intel hasn't delivered for the last years, which is true and for that F you Intel. That now that AMD is starting to deliver, everyone is kissing their arses. Even though most of them are either never going to buy these products, or have never used an AMD product before to actually know what's it like to experience the issues that AMD brings.

And secondly regarding the hype behind Deadmau5 video, I saw it. First question is how did I see it without floatplane? I have a friend with a membership. And besides let's be honest here, I'm pretty sure Linus knows this, but there are methods of viewing their videos. Just like in the vessel period. Anyway back to deadmau5, it was such a disappointment. It's about 10 minutes or so of showing some hardware, not even talking to him, I think the guy spoke 2 words. Probably a lot was cut from final product. It wasn't the video that it was hyped to be. Oh and Linus finally got his lambo. :)

I dont think its AMD love, i did dislike the video, mostly because when it came to x299 VRM issues bit, i kind of assumed Linus or Luke might have something to say about it but no it was like 1min

So you disliked the video because they did not shit on Intel enough?

I think they said enough, because I don't really think there is a lot to say. Here are the things they said in that short period of time:

>der8auer says X299 boards have VRM cooling issues.

>The temps goes up to 100 degrees, and the 8-pin power connector goes up to 60 degrees when overclocked.

>Motherboard manufacturers seems like they did not get enough time to properly design boards for it.

>Board manufacturer's seems like they don't have enough info to properly design boards either.

>Things will probably be even worse for the models with more than 10 cores.

>People should watch der8auer's video.

Not really sure what else you wanted them to say. They were kind of wrapping up too, hence why they didn't really talk about Petya either which is a topic big enough to be talked about for hours.

And looking at the comments most people were pissed that Linus just skipped whole VRM issue but then kind of shit on graphics card thats not really for gaming, for not being good for gaming (atleast thats what it will look like.)

I've looked at the comments. Only a handful of people mentions the VRM issues. I can find hundreds of comments talking about how wrong Linus is about Vega Fe.

Most people are not pissed at Linus for "skipping" the VRM issues. They are pissed because the title is "AMD Vega.. It's not amazing".

Here is a sample of the top comments right now:

Quote

Can't say it isn't expected to have poor gaming capabilities, it's not a Gaming Card

Are you really complaining that a server graphics card isn't beating a gaming graphics card?

They didnt send samples because they already knew that some noobs will bench it with games ... even if its not made for it and the driver that is optimized for games will be launched when the Vega RX launches ;)

take a 1k or even 2k usd Nvidia Quadro , then put some AAA games on it. Look at the results then. Enough said.

Everyone realizes that the frontier edition isn't for gaming, right?

Professional card you twats, I agree AMD need to hurry the fuck up with drivers, they'd had a year, but fuck your click baity title.

FUCK YOU LINUS! HOW DARE YOU SHIT ON AMD VEGA!

FRONTIER EDITION IS NOT MADE FOR GAMING

THAT'S NOT THE REAL CONSUMER GRADE FOR GAMING YOU

oh no! a youtube company with 4.1 million subs cant pay for a $1000 card! Fucking shut up

anyone a bit pissed at how ignorant Linus is being about Vega. He's acting like its a gaming card and comparing to to gaming cards like the 1080. If your reading this linus let them role out. then start making assumptions and telling us they will only be limited to 1070 capability.

I'm not a fanboy I just use whatever I can get my hands on. But linus has always been the type to down talk AMD so this doesn't surprise me that they talked crap about even vega

a

sigh vega frontier edition is designed for WORKSTATIONS not GAMING PCS

Linus is talking out of his ass hole again :D

Do you want me to keep going? What's funny is that Linus even addresses all of this in the video. But I guess AMD fanboys were too busy sucking AMD's cock to hear that.

AMD Ryzen Pro topic was just confusing. I dont really get why it was even a topic or why would people get pissed about that because Linus and Luke didnt really talk about it, they just mentioned it then started talking about other things.

People are not pissed because of Ryzen Pro. People are pissed that Linus said the Vega Fe benchmarks only puts it between a GTX 1070 and GTX 1080.

Hehe, "more enthusiastic". That's a funny way of saying "insufferable fanboys".

Also, LTT are certainly not just glossing over Intel's flaws. Linus has been shitting on Intel for quite some time now. Have you seen any of their X299 coverage at all? It's anything but "glossing over" things.

But going off that same graph, the Nvidia bars are longer than they should be as well.

Yes the entire chart is a mess, but the most obvious issue is the part where the graph says 63 FPS is less than 60 FPS.

AMD not releasing samples of VEGA shows complete confidence in performance across the board. If you wanna test it unbiased, then go get it. ✊

Those are some impressive mental gymnastics.

"AMD not sending out review samples? That means they are confident that the product is great!".

Linus was mistaken, though, when he said that AMD is not even talking about a higher-end Vega product.

"... and we'll also be talking about our more higher-end capabilities within the professional line with Vega for our professional Radeon Pro offerings, as well." - AMD dude, PCPer video, June 26th

That sounds to me as though Vega FE is low-tier Vega, compared with what's going to be talked about at Siggraph. With that in mind, a gaming performance for low-tier Vega that's between a GTX 1070 and 1080 sounds pretty promising for the rest of the lineup. I just hope that the higher-end capabilities don't depend on being dual-GPU products.
