480 vs 580

Interested on why people choose 480 over 580, from what I've seen they seem to sell for around the same and as far as I know the 580 has nearly 10% increased effective speed.

I'd imagine price plays a factor since RX 480s used to be dead cheap before the RX 580 was released. But you'd be hard pressed to find either at the moment at a reasonable price.

Not quite. RX 580 does feature an improved factory process.

 

RX 480: 14nm FinFET LPE (E = Early)

RX 580: 14nm FinFET LPP (P = Plus/Performance)

 

They improved the efficiency of the Chip, making ot possible to have a higher clock speed.

RX  580 will achieve clockspeeds, an RX 480 will NOT be able to run stable.

 

However, it also does come with higher power consumption.

 

Power Consumption in Idle AND multi-Monitor setup is reduced. Aka, the high power draw of the RX 4xx series got fixed.

 

But they are NOT the same chips with a new Name on it (even if only 0.1% are different, it is an improved version)
