So I have a desktop with a 2k monitor and I don't wanna spend alot of money on a new pc. I found that i could buy a cheap external gpu and connect it to my wifi slot/ hdmi slot on my desktop (prebuilt desktop with no pci-e) which does not have a dedicated gpu. I plan on buying a 1050 ti, gpu dock, and a power supply dedicated to the gpu 500-600 watt. I wanna know what risk it may pose on my desktop because 1 it has 5 years waranty 2 used and its cpu is decent. I wanna know what risk it may pose to my pc and wether i should just buy a full pc. I know the performance its gonna give out and know its better than integrated ghraphics. The main reason im buying it is because of the price. I was an idiot and forgot to mention many key facts and welp mg bad but yeah i know about the performance loss and again im just plan on playing video games with no stutter i dont plan on playing on 4k like j said 2k monitor and im not worries about voiding warranty im just worried about my gpu being not working https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00Q4VMLF6/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1498630140&sr=8-10&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=external+gpu

my desktop is a small form factor and it dont got space for a gpu or has a pci-e slot (sorry for the confusion) about the warranty the company thaf made it made alot of the parts nonremovable and i can really only upgrade the ram and cpu cooler internally and some parts were left removable for repairs.

  • You're losing a lot of performance going external
  • A 1050Ti won't cut it for 1440p gaming, at least not for long. My 1060 struggles
  • At this point you might as well buy a dedicated desktop
  1. Depends on what the manufacturers implementation for external graphics is. Watch Linus' comparison between the Alienware and Razer solutions. EDIT: just seen this is about a PCI-e extension, not an eGPU solution. In which case, yes at 1x, there is going to be somewhat of a limit to performance.
  2. What's 1440p got to do with anything? 2k is 1080p.
  3. @Track I don't really understand why you want an external solution. You don't mention a laptop at all in your post, so why not just plug your new graphics card straight into the PCI-e slot on the motherboard? There's no risk involved in any of these solutions, except you might void your warranty.

Hope this helps :)

And even with the warranty, unless there's a "warranty void" sticker preventing you opening your side panel (very unlikey), you can just remove the graphics card as if nothing ever happened if you need to RMA.

What's the wattage of your PSU? Sometimes prebuilt systems can be a bit limiting, but would most likely be ok with a 1050Ti.

Just out of curiosity, are you using a very small case, or mining? Because those are the only two reasons I can ever think of someone using a riser like this.

I have a very small case and im not bit coin mining and i donf have a pci-e slot my bad im a dumb dumb and had a brain fart when i typed it and messes up with the slot naming

My prebuilt system is small form factor and which was great when i got it 2 years ago before i even knew what i needed in my pc and the wattage is just enough for the screen, cpu, which is 120 watts

Ok well regardless of your psu, you’d need to buy a new one to power the egpu anyway. You’d be better off buying a new case, psu and graphics card and transplanting the rest of the system. An external gpu for a desktop just makes no sense financially or performance wise.

Yeah i know im not completely stupid but again as of right now im  broke so yeah it a really stupid plan and i know all the hate i was gonna get when i posted this about how crappy its gonna be so i just wanted to know if it'd actually work out and i got really overpriced pc prebuilt that i cant remove the cpu because its soldered in its socket and at that rate im better off buying a new pc only problem im broke. Anyways ill just end up using the gpu and psu in a new pc build later on the line when my warranty ends ands i gets some more cash which is my plan but at the current moment i need an operating pc. i can also get the item which is listed on amazon for cheaper ($20-30) most likely on a different site or ebay

The item you listed is for a Laptop, this won't work on a desktop. You could maybe use a PCI extension cable if you can't fit the card in your case and use a 1050Ti that requires a PCI cable for power like the MSI GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Gaming X. I'm not sure if it still tries to draw power from the motherboard when you connect PCI Express power though. This would still require a new PSU obviously, but the PCI extension cables are super cheap.

I might be missing something, but a new case and PSU will set you back about the same as the eGPU bay you listed.

Cheap ATX case and an inexpensive 500W PSU should cost less than $100.

Then you can just take the HDD and motherboard out of your current system (including RAM and CPU), and put it in the new case with the new PSU and graphics card.

This would be a decent upgrade for very little money.

Sorry, just realised you said you don't have a PCIe slot. Ignore all that :P
