got a spare PC lying around

so, i got a spare PC lying around being useless, it isn't the most powerful thing, running and AMD a4-3400, 7GB ram and a 750 ti. i know ethereum mining is out of the question because it has under 4GB vram.

anything i can do with this system? i don't care enough to go out and buy new hardware, i'll stick with what i got, if anything i'll upgrade the cpu to the a8-3870k

With the 750 Ti, do some F@H on it. That's WAY better of a system than my three folding rigs, and it should do nicely.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

It's not hard. Just get it running Windows of some kind, install the F@H client (Google's your friend, or it may be linked on the LTT post) and set up GPU folding.

That'll work, as long as it doesn't restart itself with updates. All my systems use Server 2012 R2.

Run linux! :D

It should be more stable than windows (especially 10)

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

Do F@H like Jamiec1130 said.

Turn it into a NAS.

Turn it into an HTPC.

Just some options.

Linux folds WAY faster than windows, at least it did a few months back when I was doing it.  If you care about points it's better on Linux, if you just want it doing something useful, then windows is fine, or at least better than nothing.

This is mostly due to lower overhead. Windows (especially 10) has tons of crap running in the background.

Linux however, is usually pretty good in that department. It's also more stable than DOS based systems in general.
